−category: Architectural / Finishes
−toc_depth: 3
−description: >
− When to use: Permanently installed entrance flooring and walk-off systems specified to capture moisture, soil, grit, and snowmelt at building entries before they are tracked into occupied space — recessed and surface-mounted aluminum and extruded grid grilles and gratings, roll-up grates, recessed mats, and walk-off carpet and fiber tile in the interior wiper zone. Covers the three-zone (scraper / scraper-wiper / wiper) matting design principle and walk-off length, grille type and rail construction, frame and recess-depth coordination, tread-surface inserts (vinyl, rubber, carpet, abrasive, serrated aluminum tread), load rating (pedestrian, rolling cart and wheelchair, occasional vehicular), accessibility (grating opening size and orientation, change-in-level and bevel limits, firm and stable surface), slip resistance, flammability and smoke performance, drainage, installation, and cleaning and maintenance.
− Not intended for: Field-installed broadloom and modular carpet outside the entrance wiper zone (see [[sync/carpet]]); resilient flooring such as vinyl and rubber sheet and tile in the field (see [[sync/resilient-flooring]]); ceramic and porcelain tile floors (see [[sync/ceramic-tile]]); natural-stone tile floors (see [[sync/natural-stone-tile]]); loose, unsecured rugs and temporary mats not part of a permanent walk-off system; exterior pedestrian paving, trench drains, and area drains; structural floor trench, pit, and recess forming in the slab (coordinate the recess with the cast-in-place concrete and the structural drawings); roof and balcony pedestal pavers.

−
−# Scope {toc}
−
−## This standard governs the materials, configuration, and installation of permanently installed entrance flooring and walk-off systems — recessed and surface-mounted aluminum and extruded grid grilles and gratings, roll-up grates, recessed mats, and walk-off carpet and fiber tile — provided at building entrances to capture moisture, soil, grit, sand, and snowmelt from foot traffic before it is carried onto the interior finish floor. {note}
−
−## An entrance flooring system is the first line of defense for every downstream finish in the building and is not a doormat. {note}
−
−## Soil and water that are not captured at the door are ground into corridor and lobby flooring, abrade and dull it, raise cleaning frequency and cost, and create a slip hazard on hard surfaces wherever a wet shoe transitions from the entry onto polished stone, tile, or resilient flooring. {note}
−
−## The single largest determinant of how much soil and moisture a building tracks in is the length and quality of the walk-off provided at the entrance, and that is a design decision made in this standard, not an afterthought left to a loose rug. {note}
−
−## A walk-off system is a sequence of three zones in series — an exterior scraper zone that removes mud, grit, sand, and snow before the door; a transitional scraper-wiper zone at the threshold or vestibule that scrapes remaining debris and begins wicking moisture; and an interior wiper zone that dries the shoe and traps the last fine soil and moisture below its surface. {note}
−
−## An interior wiper carpet installed without a hard scraper ahead of it is quickly overwhelmed with grit and mud and becomes saturated, while a scraper grille with no wiper behind it leaves the shoe wet and tracks water onto the lobby floor. {note}
−
−## The Contractor and the Architect shall treat the entrance as a system spanning all three zones and shall provide adequate total walk-off length, not merely a single mat at the door.
−
−## A recessed grille requires a slab recess of the correct depth formed in the cast-in-place concrete, with drainage where exposed to weather, and the recess depth, the frame, and the grille thickness shall be reconciled so the finished tread surface is flush with the adjacent finish floor within the accessible change-in-level limit.
−
−## The Contractor shall coordinate the slab recess and its drainage with the structural and concrete drawings before the slab is placed.
−
−## A recess formed to the wrong depth after the fact is expensive and disruptive to correct. {note}
−
−## The Contractor shall coordinate the interior wiper zone, where it is walk-off carpet or fiber tile, with [[sync/carpet]].
−
−## The Contractor shall coordinate transitions to adjacent hard finishes with [[sync/ceramic-tile]], [[sync/natural-stone-tile]], and [[sync/resilient-flooring]] so that finish-floor elevations and thresholds reconcile and accessible-route level changes stay within limits.
−
−# Referenced Standards {toc}

−
−## Where the contract documents, a referenced standard, or the manufacturer's written instructions impose a more stringent requirement than the minimum of any other standard, the more stringent requirement governs unless the Architect of Record directs otherwise in writing.
−
−## The manufacturer's written installation instructions define the conditions under which the product warranty is valid, and the Contractor shall follow them in addition to this standard.
−
−## The accessibility provisions of ICC A117.1 and the 2010 ADA Standards are mandatory at any entrance on an accessible route and govern grating opening size and orientation, change in level at the perimeter and at transitions, and the requirement for a firm, stable, and slip-resistant surface.
−
−## Flammability of the textile wiper zone is governed by the Flammability — Textile Inserts and Walk-Off Carpet section of this standard, which states the pill-test baseline and the critical-radiant-flux classification. {note}
−
−## ANSI A326.3 is the test method for the dynamic coefficient of friction of the hard tread surfaces. {note}
−
−## A permanently installed entryway system of not less than 10 feet in the primary direction of travel at each regularly used exterior entrance is the threshold recognized by LEED for the entryway-systems requirement. {note}
−
−# Submittals {toc}
−
−## Action Submittals {toc}
−
−### The Contractor shall submit the following for the Architect's review prior to fabrication and installation:
−
−- Product data for each entrance flooring system, identifying the type (recessed grille, surface-mounted grille, roll-up grate, recessed mat, or walk-off carpet/fiber tile), the rail or grid material and finish, the tread-insert type and color, the load rating, the overall thickness, and the manufacturer's written installation instructions
−- Shop drawings showing each mat or grille in plan with overall dimensions and field-cut layout, the frame profile and corner construction, the recess depth and drainage where recessed, the relationship of the finished tread surface to the adjacent finish floor, and the direction of the rails relative to the primary direction of travel
−- Samples of each tread-insert type and color, of each rail and frame finish, and of the walk-off carpet or fiber tile where used
−- Accessibility documentation: the grating opening dimension and orientation, the change in level at the frame perimeter and at any transition, and confirmation that the tread surface is firm, stable, and slip-resistant
−- Slip-resistance documentation: the dynamic coefficient of friction of the hard tread surfaces tested per ANSI A326.3, for the use classification (interior wet) applicable to an entrance
−- Flammability documentation for walk-off carpet and fiber-tile inserts: the 16 CFR 1630 / ASTM D2859 pass result, and the ASTM E648 critical radiant flux value and class where corridor or exit installation applies
−- Maintenance instructions describing the cleaning method and frequency, the procedure for lifting roll-up or hinged grilles and individual tiles to clean the recess and drain beneath, and replacement of worn tread inserts
−
−```datasheet
−label: Action Submittals Required
−type: checkbox
−options:
− - "Product data — each entrance flooring system"
− - "Shop drawings — plan, frame, recess depth, drainage, rail direction"
− - "Samples — tread inserts, rail/frame finish, walk-off carpet/tile"
− - "Accessibility documentation (grating opening, change in level, firm/stable/slip-resistant)"
− - "Slip-resistance documentation (ANSI A326.3 DCOF, interior wet)"
− - "Flammability documentation for textile inserts (16 CFR 1630 / ASTM E648)"
− - "Maintenance instructions"
−default: "Shop drawings — plan, frame, recess depth, drainage, rail direction"
−```
−
−### Because the recessed-grille system depends on a slab recess formed by others, the shop drawings and the recess-depth coordination shall be reviewed before the slab is placed wherever the system is recessed.
−
−## Closeout Submittals {toc}
−
−### The Contractor shall provide the following at project closeout:
−
−- Manufacturer warranty documentation for each entrance flooring system, executed in the Owner's name
−- Record shop drawings of the as-installed systems, including the recess depths and frame elevations actually achieved
−- Attic-stock transmittal documenting spare tread inserts and any spare tiles or grille sections delivered to the Owner
−
−```datasheet
−label: Required Closeout Submittals
−type: checkbox
−options:
− - "Manufacturer warranty documentation (executed in Owner's name)"
− - "Record shop drawings (as-installed recess depths and frame elevations)"
− - "Attic-stock transmittal (spare tread inserts, tiles, grille sections)"
−default: ["Manufacturer warranty documentation (executed in Owner's name)", "Record shop drawings (as-installed recess depths and frame elevations)", "Attic-stock transmittal (spare tread inserts, tiles, grille sections)"]
−```
−
−# Quality Assurance {toc}
−
−## Installer Qualifications {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Installer Qualification
−type: radio
−options:
− - "Experienced entrance-flooring installer per manufacturer instructions"
− - "Manufacturer-certified installer (where required to validate warranty)"
−default: "Experienced entrance-flooring installer per manufacturer instructions"
−```
−
−### Entrance flooring shall be installed by an installer experienced in the specific system type and, for recessed systems, in setting frames flush to a finished floor over a formed recess.
−
−### The flush relationship between the tread surface and the adjacent finish floor is the most common failure of installation craft. {note}
−
−### A frame set too high creates a trip hazard and a change in level exceeding the accessible limit, and a frame set too low ponds water and collects debris at the perimeter. {note}
−
−### The Contractor shall not begin installation of a recessed system until the recess has been verified for depth, level, and drainage.
−
−## Mock-Up {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Mock-Up Required
−type: radio
−options:
− - "Yes — install one complete entrance, including frame, transition, and tread inserts"
− - "No"
−default: "No"
−```
−
−### Where a mock-up is required, the Contractor shall install one complete entrance system at a location directed by the Architect, including the frame, the transition to the adjacent finish floor, and the specified tread inserts, to establish the acceptable standard for flushness, transition detailing, rail direction, and insert appearance.
−
−### The mock-up shall remain available for comparison throughout the work.
−
−## Coordination of the Recess {toc}
−
−### Before the slab is placed, the Contractor shall coordinate the location, plan dimensions, depth, and drainage of every floor recess that will receive a recessed grille or mat with the structural and concrete drawings and with the frame manufacturer's required recess depth.
−
−### The recess depth shall match the frame and grille thickness so the finished tread is flush with the adjacent finish floor.
−
−### The recess shall be square, level, and dimensioned to receive the frame with the manufacturer's required clearance.
−
−### Where the entrance is exposed to weather or to wash-down, the recess shall be sloped to a drain or weep so captured water does not pond beneath the grille.
−
−### A recess formed to the wrong depth or without drainage is the single most expensive and disruptive error in this work, because it is fixed in concrete before the grille is ever ordered. {note}
−
−# Service Conditions {toc}
−
−## Exposure and Climate {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Entrance Exposure
−type: radio
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "Interior vestibule / lobby (conditioned, protected from direct weather)"
− - "Exterior-exposed entry (direct rain, snow, freeze-thaw)"
− - "Covered exterior (canopy / overhang, wind-driven moisture)"
−default: "Interior vestibule / lobby (conditioned, protected from direct weather)"
−```
−
−### The exposure determines the materials, the drainage, and the walk-off length.
−
−### An interior vestibule or lobby grille is protected from direct weather and is selected primarily for soil and moisture capture and appearance. {note}
−
−### An exterior-exposed or covered exterior entry sees rain, wind-driven moisture, and in cold climates snow, ice, and freeze-thaw, and shall be provided with drainage beneath the grille, corrosion-resistant aluminum and stainless or coated hardware, tread inserts that perform when wet and frozen, and additional walk-off length to handle the heavier moisture and grit load.
−
−### Snow and ice that melt beneath a grille and refreeze will heave inserts and jam roll-up grilles if the recess does not drain. {note}
−
−## Traffic Volume and Walk-Off Length {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Total Walk-Off Length (Primary Direction of Travel)
−type: range
−unit: ft
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− min: 6
− max: 30
− setpoints: [6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30]
−default: 15
−```
−
−### The total walk-off length across all zones is the governing performance parameter of the entrance and shall be provided in the primary direction of travel.
−
−### Research-based guidance recommends on the order of 15 to 25 feet of total walk-off for effective soil and moisture capture; the CRI guidance is commonly cited as 12 to 15 feet for office buildings and 20 to 25 feet for high-traffic and high-cleanliness occupancies such as grocery stores, healthcare facilities, and schools. {note}
−
−### A minimum of 10 feet of permanently installed entryway system in the primary direction of travel at each regularly used exterior entrance is the threshold recognized by LEED for the entryway-systems requirement and should be treated as a floor, not a target.
−
−### Insufficient walk-off length is the most common functional failure of entrance flooring: a 3-foot mat at the door captures only a fraction of the soil and moisture and saturates within hours of a storm, after which it tracks moisture rather than removing it. {note}
−
−### The walk-off length, the zone arrangement, and the mat extents shall be shown on the [[drawing: finish plan]].
−
−# System Types and Configurations {toc}
−
−## Walk-Off Zone Arrangement {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Walk-Off Zone Arrangement
−type: select
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "Three-zone — exterior scraper + transitional scraper-wiper + interior wiper"
− - "Two-zone — scraper grille + interior wiper carpet/tile"
− - "Single-zone — recessed grille at entrance only"
− - "Single-zone — interior wiper carpet/tile only (protected interior entrance)"
−default: "Two-zone — scraper grille + interior wiper carpet/tile"
−```
−
−### The walk-off shall be arranged as a sequence of zones appropriate to the exposure and traffic.
−
−### The full three-zone arrangement — an exterior scraper to remove mud, grit, and snow before the door, a transitional scraper-wiper zone at the threshold or vestibule, and an interior wiper to dry the shoe and trap fine soil — is appropriate for high-traffic and weather-exposed entrances. {note}
−
−### A two-zone arrangement of a recessed scraper grille followed by an interior wiper carpet covers the majority of commercial entrances. {note}
−
−### A single recessed grille or a single interior wiper may be adequate for a protected, low-traffic interior entrance.
−
−### The zones shall be continuous and in series across the primary direction of travel, with no untreated gap between them where a shoe re-soils before reaching the interior floor.
−
−## System Type {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Entrance Flooring System Type
−type: select
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "Recessed aluminum/extruded grid grille (rails with tread inserts)"
− - "Surface-mounted grid grille with ramped/beveled edge frame"
− - "Roll-up grille / roll-up grate (linked rails, rolls for cleaning)"
− - "Recessed mat (resilient/rubber link or solid mat in recess)"
− - "Walk-off carpet / fiber tile (interior wiper zone)"
−default: "Recessed aluminum/extruded grid grille (rails with tread inserts)"
−```
−
−### The system type shall be selected for the zone, the exposure, the load, and the cleaning method.
−
−### A recessed aluminum or extruded grid grille — parallel tread rails carrying replaceable insert strips, set into a slab recess flush with the finish floor — is the standard scraper and scraper-wiper system for primary entrances, because the open spaces between rails let soil and water fall below the walking surface and out of the traffic path. {note}
−
−### A surface-mounted grid grille sits on top of the finished floor within a ramped or beveled-edge frame and is used where no recess can be formed, such as in renovation; the ramped frame is required so the raised mat does not create a non-compliant change in level. {note}
−
−### A roll-up grille has its rails linked by flexible connectors so the entire grille can be rolled up to clean the recess and any drain beneath it, which is the practical advantage where the recess collects significant grit and water. {note}
−
−### A recessed mat is a resilient or rubber-link product set in a shallow recess where a rail grille is not desired. {note}
−
−### Walk-off carpet and fiber tile serve the interior wiper zone, where the function is to dry the shoe and absorb the last moisture rather than to scrape. {note}
−
−### Grille Rail Construction {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Grille Rail / Grid Construction
−type: select
−options:
− - "Extruded aluminum tread rails, individual (lift-out) grille"
− - "Extruded aluminum tread rails, hinged grille (rigid, hinged sections)"
− - "Extruded aluminum tread rails, roll-up grille (flexible cable/connector linked)"
− - "Not applicable — recessed mat or walk-off carpet/tile"
−default: "Extruded aluminum tread rails, roll-up grille (flexible cable/connector linked)"
−```
−
−#### The rails of a grid grille shall be extruded aluminum (ASTM B221) of an alloy and temper rated for foot-traffic floor service and for the load classification specified.
−
−#### An individual lift-out grille is built of rigid sections that lift out for cleaning; a hinged grille has rigid sections joined by hinges so it folds for cleaning while remaining rigid in plane; and a roll-up grille has the rails linked by flexible cables or connectors so the whole grille rolls up, which best suits recesses that must be cleaned out frequently and any recess with a drain beneath it. {note}
−
−#### The connector and hinge hardware shall be corrosion-resistant where the entrance is exposed to weather or wash-down.
−
−### Tread Insert {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Tread-Surface Insert
−type: select
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "Vinyl (corrugated/ribbed) — interior, quiet, easy clean"
− - "Rubber tread — exterior/wet, slip resistant, durable"
− - "Carpet / fiber insert — wiper, moisture absorption"
− - "Abrasive (carborundum/carbide grit) strip — maximum scraping/slip resistance"
− - "Serrated/grooved aluminum tread — heavy-duty scraping, no insert"
−default: "Carpet / fiber insert — wiper, moisture absorption"
−```
−
−#### The tread insert is the walking surface carried by the rails and shall be selected for the zone function and the exposure.
−
−#### A corrugated or ribbed vinyl insert is quiet, comfortable, and easy to clean and suits interior scraper-wiper service. {note}
−
−#### A rubber tread is durable and slip-resistant when wet and suits exterior and wet exposures. {note}
−
−#### A carpet or fiber insert is the wiper surface that absorbs and holds moisture and traps fine soil and is appropriate for the interior wiper zone. {note}
−
−#### An abrasive carborundum or carbide-grit strip provides the most aggressive scraping and the highest slip resistance and is used in exterior scraper rails and where falls are a heightened concern. {note}
−
−#### A serrated or grooved bare-aluminum tread provides heavy-duty scraping with no insert to wear out. {note}
−
−#### Inserts may be combined across the rails of a single grille — for example, abrasive at the leading rails grading to carpet at the trailing rails — to scrape first and wipe last within one mat.
−
−#### Inserts shall be field-replaceable so a worn insert can be renewed without replacing the grille.
−
−### Frame and Recess Depth {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Frame Type and Recess Depth
−type: select
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "Recessed frame — shallow recess (approx. 3/8 in to 1/2 in finished depth)"
− - "Recessed frame — standard recess (approx. 5/8 in to 13/16 in finished depth)"
− - "Recessed frame — deep pit (approx. 1-3/4 in to 4 in, with drainage)"
− - "Surface-mounted frame — ramped/beveled edge, no recess"
−default: "Recessed frame — standard recess (approx. 5/8 in to 13/16 in finished depth)"
−```
−
−#### The frame shall match the grille or mat thickness and the recess depth so the finished tread surface is flush with the adjacent finish floor within the accessible change-in-level limit.
−
−#### Recessed systems are commonly available in a shallow profile on the order of 3/8 to 1/2 inch, a standard profile on the order of 5/8 to 13/16 inch, and deep-pit profiles from roughly 1-3/4 inches to 4 inches for heavy-duty and weather-exposed entrances that require drainage beneath the grille. {note}
−
−#### A surface-mounted frame is used only where no recess can be formed and shall have a ramped or beveled edge on all exposed sides so the raised mat does not create a non-compliant change in level or a trip hazard.
−
−#### The recess depth, the frame, and the grille thickness shall be reconciled on the shop drawings and verified in the field before the grille is set.
−
−### Drainage {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Drainage Beneath Recessed System
−type: radio
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "None — interior, protected entrance (no standing water expected)"
− - "Sloped recess to weep / floor drain"
− - "Recess with dedicated drain connection (heavy moisture / wash-down)"
−default: "None — interior, protected entrance (no standing water expected)"
−```
−
−#### Where the entrance is exposed to weather, to snowmelt, or to wash-down cleaning, the recess shall drain so captured water does not pond beneath the grille, stagnate, freeze, or wick back up into the tread.
−
−#### A sloped recess directing water to a weep or a floor drain is adequate for most covered and lightly exposed entrances; a recess with a dedicated drain connection is appropriate for heavy moisture and for wash-down maintenance. {note}
−
−#### An interior, protected entrance with no standing water expected need not be drained.
−
−#### A roll-up grille is preferred over a fixed grille wherever a drain is provided, because the grille must be lifted to clean the recess and the drain.
−
−### Load Rating {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Load Rating (Rolling Load per Wheel)
−type: select
−drawing_ref: true
−options:
− - "Pedestrian and light rolling (carts, strollers, wheelchairs) — approx. 300 lb/wheel"
− - "Heavy rolling traffic (loaded carts, gurneys, pallet jacks) — approx. 350 to 500 lb/wheel"
− - "Maximum / institutional duty — approx. 1,000 lb/wheel"
− - "Occasional vehicular (loading entrance, valet) — manufacturer-rated for the wheel load"
−default: "Pedestrian and light rolling (carts, strollers, wheelchairs) — approx. 300 lb/wheel"
−```
−
−#### The grille shall be rated for the heaviest rolling load that will cross it, expressed as load per wheel, not merely for foot traffic.
−
−#### Standard grid grilles are commonly rated on the order of 300 pounds per wheel, which covers pedestrian traffic, hand carts, strollers, and wheelchairs; heavy-duty grilles are rated on the order of 350 to 500 pounds per wheel for loaded carts, hospital gurneys, and pallet jacks; and institutional-duty grilles reach approximately 1,000 pounds per wheel. {note}
−
−#### Where the entrance receives occasional vehicular traffic — a loading entrance or a valet drive-over — the grille shall be specifically manufacturer-rated for that wheel load and rail spacing, because a pedestrian-rated grille will deflect and fail under a vehicle wheel.
−
−#### A grille that is under-rated for its rolling load will deflect, loosen its inserts, and ravel its rails at the leading edge. {note}
−
−### Mat Size and Layout {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Mat Size and Layout
−type: text
−drawing_ref: true
−default: deferred
−```
−
−#### Each mat and grille shall be sized to the full clear width of the entrance opening — wall to wall and jamb to jamb — and to the total walk-off length of its zone, as shown on the [[drawing: finish plan]].
−
−#### A mat narrower than the door allows traffic to bypass it on one side and re-soil downstream; a mat shorter than the specified zone length under-performs. {note}
−
−#### Large grilles shall be detailed in field-installable sections with the section joints coordinated so they fall out of the most concentrated traffic path where practical.
−
−#### The rails shall run perpendicular to the primary direction of travel so that every step crosses the open spaces between rails.
−
−# Accessibility {toc}
−
−## Grating Openings {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Grating Opening Size and Orientation (ICC A117.1 / ADA)
−type: radio
−options:
− - "Openings shall not pass a 1/2 in sphere; elongated openings oriented with long dimension perpendicular to travel"
− - "Openings limited to 1/2 in in both dimensions (no dominant travel direction)"
−default: "Openings shall not pass a 1/2 in sphere; elongated openings oriented with long dimension perpendicular to travel"
−```
−
−### On an accessible route, openings in the entrance flooring surface — the spaces between grille rails — shall not permit the passage of a ½-inch-diameter sphere, so that a cane tip, a high heel, or a small wheel cannot drop into or catch in the opening.
−
−### Where the openings are elongated, as the spaces between parallel rails are, the long dimension of the opening shall be oriented perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel, which conveniently aligns with the requirement that the rails run perpendicular to travel for effective scraping.
−
−### Where there is no dominant direction of travel, openings shall be limited to ½ inch in both dimensions.
−
−### A grille with the rails running parallel to travel, or with gaps wider than ½ inch, is both a less effective scraper and an accessibility and trip hazard. {note}
−
−## Change in Level and Transitions {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Change in Level at Frame / Transition (ICC A117.1 / ADA)
−type: radio
−options:
− - "Flush — change in level not more than 1/4 in (no treatment required)"
− - "1/4 in to 1/2 in — beveled, slope not steeper than 1:2"
− - "Surface-mounted — ramped/beveled frame edge on all exposed sides"
−default: "Flush — change in level not more than 1/4 in (no treatment required)"
−```
−
−### The change in level between the entrance flooring tread surface and the adjacent finish floor shall be controlled at every edge of the system on an accessible route.
−
−### A change in level of not more than ¼ inch is permitted without treatment.
−
−### A change in level between ¼ inch and ½ inch shall be beveled with a slope not steeper than 1:2.
−
−### A change in level greater than ½ inch is not permitted at an entrance mat and shall be eliminated by correcting the recess depth or by ramping.
−
−### A surface-mounted grille, which necessarily sits above the floor, shall have a ramped or beveled frame edge on all exposed sides to bring the change in level within these limits.
−
−## Firm, Stable, and Slip-Resistant Surface {toc}
−
−```datasheet
−label: Tread Slip Resistance (ANSI A326.3, Interior Wet)
−type: range
−unit: DCOF
−options:
− min: 0.42
− max: 0.60
− step: 0.01
−setpoints: [0.42, 0.50, 0.55]
−default: 0.42
−```
−
−### The entrance flooring surface on an accessible route shall be firm, stable, and slip-resistant.
−
−### The grille shall be set so it does not rock, shift, or deflect underfoot; inserts shall be secured so they do not lift or curl; and roll-up and link mats shall lie flat and not ripple.
−
−### The tread surface shall provide slip resistance appropriate to a surface that is wet in normal use, which is the defining condition of an entrance.
−
−### The dynamic coefficient of friction of the hard tread surfaces — vinyl, rubber, and aluminum treads — shall be measured per ANSI A326.3 for the interior-wet use classification and shall be not less than 0.42, the recognized minimum for level interior floors expected to be wet in use.
−
−### Higher slip-resistance values are appropriate for the exterior scraper zone and for entrances where wind-driven rain, snowmelt, or wash-down keep the surface persistently wet; abrasive carborundum inserts provide the highest slip resistance for these conditions. {note}
−
−### The DCOF value is a comparative measure and does not by itself guarantee that a person will not slip; adequate walk-off length to actually dry the shoe is the primary slip-safety measure, because the most slippery point at any entrance is the dry hard floor immediately beyond a wet shoe that the walk-off failed to dry. {note}

−# Flammability — Textile Inserts and Walk-Off Carpet {toc}
−
−```datasheet

−## Walk-off carpet and fiber-tile inserts are textile floor coverings and shall pass the federal surface-flammability pill test of 16 CFR 1630 (DOC FF 1-70), technically equivalent to ASTM D2859, as a baseline.
−
−## Where the entrance is within or opens onto an interior corridor or exit regulated by the IBC, the textile wiper is additionally regulated for critical radiant flux measured per ASTM E648 (technically equivalent to NFPA 253), and the applicable Class I (not less than 0.45 W/cm²) or Class II (not less than 0.22 W/cm²) shall be confirmed from the building code compliance path for the location.
−
−## Most entrance vestibules are not corridors and are regulated by the pill test alone, but the Architect shall confirm the classification rather than assume it.
−
−## Aluminum, vinyl, and rubber tread components are not textiles and are not subject to the textile flammability tests. {note}

− - "Not separately regulated at this location"
−default: "Not separately regulated at this location"
−```
−
−### Where the building code or the Owner's program requires limiting smoke generation for the textile wiper, the specific optical density of smoke shall be measured per ASTM E662 (NFPA 258) and shall not exceed the limit stated.

−
−### Where indoor air quality is a project requirement and the wiper zone is walk-off carpet or fiber tile, the textile and its adhesive shall be certified to a recognized low-emitting-materials program such as CRI Green Label Plus or an equivalent FloorScore / CDPH Section 01350 certification.
−
−# Installation {toc}
−
−## Recess and Frame Setting {toc}
−
−### The Contractor shall verify the recess for depth, level, squareness, and drainage before setting the frame.
−
−### The recess shall be clean, sound, and free of debris and standing water; where a drain is provided beneath the grille, it shall be confirmed clear and the recess slope confirmed to drain to it.
−
−### The frame shall be set level and square and anchored so the top of the frame establishes a finished tread surface flush with the adjacent finish floor within the accessible change-in-level limit.
−
−### Frames set in a green slab or in a grout bed shall be shimmed and braced so they do not shift before the bed has set.
−
−### The transition from the frame to each adjacent finish — stone, tile, resilient, or carpet — shall be detailed so the finish-floor elevations reconcile and the level change at the perimeter stays within limits.
−
−## Grille and Insert Placement {toc}
−
−### The grille shall be installed with the rails running perpendicular to the primary direction of travel and shall be field-cut and fitted so it lies flat, fully supported by the frame, with the manufacturer's clearance at the frame perimeter and no rocking or deflection underfoot.
−
−### Tread inserts shall be installed in the correct rails per the approved layout, fully seated and secured so they do not lift, curl, or migrate, with the abrasive, scraper, and wiper inserts located as shown where inserts are mixed within a grille.
−
−### Roll-up and link grilles shall lie flat without ripples or raised connectors.
−
−## Walk-Off Carpet and Fiber-Tile Installation {toc}
−
−### Where the interior wiper zone is walk-off carpet or fiber tile, it shall be installed in accordance with the carpet provisions of [[sync/carpet]] — including subfloor preparation, moisture acceptance, and securement appropriate to the format — and shall be coordinated so its finished surface meets the grille frame and the adjacent finish floor within the accessible change-in-level limit, with a beveled transition where required.
−
−### The wiper zone shall be securely attached so it does not shift or ripple under traffic and rolling loads.
−

−```
−
−## Entrance flooring is the hardest-working flooring in the building and only performs if it is maintained; a grille whose recess is full of compacted grit, or a wiper carpet that is saturated and never extracted, has stopped capturing soil and is now redistributing it. {note}
−
−## The Contractor shall deliver maintenance instructions describing the routine cleaning method and frequency for each system, the procedure to lift the grille — individual sections, hinged sections, or the rolled-up grille — to vacuum and wash the recess and clear any drain beneath it, and the method to extract or replace saturated wiper inserts.
−
−## Roll-up and hinged grilles are specified in part because they make this recess cleaning practical; a fixed grille over an un-drained recess that cannot be lifted will silt up and fail. {note}
−
−## Worn, torn, or permanently soiled tread inserts shall be replaced from attic stock rather than left in service, because a worn insert no longer scrapes or wipes and a torn insert is a trip hazard.
−
−## The Contractor shall deliver to the Owner spare tread inserts of each type and color, and spare grille sections or wiper tiles where used, in the percentage of installed insert length or area stated, so the Owner can renew worn or damaged inserts with matching material.
−
−## Spare material shall be labeled by product type and color.

−
−## The manufacturer shall warrant the entrance flooring system against defects in materials and workmanship for the period stated.
−
−## Premium grid-grille systems commonly carry a long-term or lifetime limited warranty on the rail and frame structure, with tread inserts treated as wearing items on a shorter term. {note}
−
−## The Contractor shall warrant the installation — including recess and drainage coordination, frame setting and flushness, grille fit, insert securement, and transitions to adjacent finishes — against defective workmanship for the project warranty period.
−
−## Failures arising from a recess formed to the wrong depth or without required drainage, from loads exceeding the grille's rated rolling load, or from maintenance contrary to the manufacturer's instructions are excluded.

+title: Entrance Flooring and Walk-Off Systems
+category: Architectural / Finishes
+description: >
+ When to use: Permanently installed entrance flooring and walk-off systems that capture moisture, soil, grit, and snowmelt from foot and rolling traffic at building entrances before it reaches the interior finish floor. Covers recessed and surface-mounted rail grilles with replaceable tread inserts in lift-out, hinged, and roll-up construction, recessed and surface-mounted link and modular mats, and walk-off carpet tile and broadloom in the interior wiper zone. Addresses the arrangement of the exterior scraper, threshold scraper-wiper, and interior wiper zones, walk-off length, rail and frame materials, recess depth and drainage, rolling load rating, tread inserts, accessibility of the walking surface, slip resistance, flammability and low-emitting requirements for textiles, installation, cleaning, warranty, and attic stock.
+
+ Not intended for: Broadloom and modular carpet outside the entrance wiper zone ([[sync/carpet]]); resilient sheet and tile flooring in the field ([[sync/resilient-flooring]]); ceramic and porcelain tile ([[sync/ceramic-tile]]) and natural stone tile ([[sync/natural-stone-tile]]) beyond the transition at the entrance frame; loose rugs and temporary mats that are not part of a permanent system; exterior pedestrian paving, trench drains, and area drains; the forming of the slab recess itself ([[sync/cast-in-place-concrete]]); the doors, thresholds, and framing at the entrance ([[sync/automatic-entrance-doors]] and [[sync/aluminum-entrances-and-storefronts]]); and roof and balcony pedestal pavers.
+---
+
+# Scope {toc}
+
+## This standard governs the materials, configuration, and installation of permanently installed entrance flooring and walk-off systems provided at building entrances to capture moisture, soil, grit, sand, and snowmelt from foot and rolling traffic before it is carried onto the interior finish floor. {note}
+
+## The systems in scope are rail grilles with replaceable tread inserts, set in a slab recess or surface-mounted within a beveled frame, in lift-out, hinged, and roll-up construction; recessed and surface-mounted link and modular mats; and walk-off carpet tile and broadloom serving the interior wiper zone. {note}
+
+## Soil and water that are not captured at the door are ground into the lobby and corridor flooring, dull and abrade it, raise cleaning frequency and cost, and create a slip hazard on hard floors wherever a wet shoe steps from the entrance onto polished stone, tile, or resilient flooring. {note}
+
+## The quantity of soil and moisture a building tracks in is set by the length and arrangement of the walk-off at its entrances more than by any other single decision, which is why the walk-off is designed under this standard rather than left to a loose rug placed after occupancy. {note}
+
+## A walk-off is a sequence of zones in series: an exterior scraper zone outside the door that removes mud, grit, sand, and snow; a threshold scraper-wiper zone at the door or in the vestibule that removes the remaining coarse soil and begins taking up moisture; and an interior wiper zone that dries the shoe and holds the last fine soil and moisture below its walking surface. {note}
+
+## A wiper textile installed with no scraper ahead of it is overwhelmed by grit and mud and saturates within hours of a storm, and a scraper grille with no wiper behind it leaves the shoe wet and passes water onto the lobby floor, so the zones are designed together rather than one at a time. {note}
+
+## The following are governed elsewhere and are outside this standard: {note}
+
+- carpet outside the interior wiper zone, governed by [[sync/carpet]]
+- resilient, ceramic tile, and natural stone flooring beyond the transition at the entrance frame, governed by [[sync/resilient-flooring]], [[sync/ceramic-tile]], and [[sync/natural-stone-tile]]
+- forming, reinforcing, and finishing of the slab recess, governed by [[sync/cast-in-place-concrete]]
+- the entrance doors, thresholds, sidelights, and framing, governed by [[sync/automatic-entrance-doors]] and [[sync/aluminum-entrances-and-storefronts]]
+- loose rugs and temporary mats that are not part of a permanent system
+- exterior pedestrian paving, trench drains, and area drains
+- roof and balcony pedestal pavers
+
+## Entrance flooring shall be provided at each entrance indicated on [[drawing: the finish plans]].
+
+## Each entrance shall be provided with the walk-off zones selected in the datasheet, arranged in series across the primary direction of travel with no untreated gap between zones.
+
+## All work under this standard shall comply with the accessibility provisions of ICC A117.1 and the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design at every entrance on an accessible route.
+
+## The system manufacturer's written installation instructions define the conditions under which the product warranty holds, and the Contractor shall follow them in addition to this standard.
+
+# Referenced Standards {toc}
+
+## Materials, testing, and installation shall comply with the latest adopted edition of each of the following unless a specific edition is cited.
+
+## Where the contract documents, a referenced standard, or the manufacturer's written instructions conflict, the more stringent requirement shall govern unless the Architect of Record directs otherwise in writing.

+
+# Submittals {toc}
+
+## Action Submittals {toc}
+
+### The Contractor shall submit the following for the Architect of Record's review before fabrication and before the slab recess is formed wherever the system is recessed:
+
+- product data for each entrance flooring system, identifying the system type, the rail and frame material and finish, the grille construction, the tread insert types and colors, the rolling load rating, and the overall thickness
+- shop drawings showing each grille and mat in plan with overall dimensions, section layout, and field-cut layout, the frame profile and corner construction, the recess depth and drainage where recessed, the elevation of the finished tread surface relative to each adjacent finish floor, and the direction of the rails relative to the primary direction of travel
+- samples of each tread insert type and color, of each rail and frame finish, and of each walk-off textile
+- accessibility documentation stating the largest opening in the walking surface, the orientation of elongated openings, and the change in level at the frame perimeter and at each transition
+- a slip resistance test report giving the dynamic coefficient of friction of each hard tread surface tested to ANSI A326.3 for the product use category that applies to its zone
+- a flammability test report for each walk-off textile giving the 16 CFR 1630 result and, where a critical radiant flux class applies, the ASTM E648 critical radiant flux and class
+- a low-emitting certification for each walk-off textile and its adhesive where the datasheet requires one
+- maintenance instructions describing the cleaning method and frequency for each system, the procedure for lifting or rolling the grille to clean the recess and any drain beneath it, and the procedure for replacing tread inserts

+
+### Where a system is recessed, the shop drawings and the recess depth coordination shall be reviewed and returned before the slab in which the recess is formed is placed.
+
+### A recessed grille depends on a recess formed by another trade before the grille is ordered, so a shop drawing reviewed after the slab is placed can only report a recess error, not prevent one. {note}
+
+## Closeout Submittals {toc}
+
+### The Contractor shall submit the following before the entrance flooring is accepted:
+
+- manufacturer warranty documentation for each system, executed in the Owner's name
+- record shop drawings of the installed systems, including the recess depths and frame elevations actually achieved
+- a signed receipt from the Owner for the spare parts delivered
+

+
+# Quality Assurance {toc}
+
+## Installer Qualifications {toc}
+
+### Entrance flooring shall be installed by an installer who has installed systems of the same type, and for recessed systems has set frames flush to a finished floor over a formed recess, for not less than the period indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Minimum Installer Experience with Entrance Flooring Systems
+type: range
+unit: years
+options:
+ min: 0
+ max: 10
+ setpoints: [0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10]
+```
+
+### Whether the installer shall be authorized by the system manufacturer shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Installer Authorization by the System Manufacturer
+type: radio
+options:
+ - "Required"
+ - "Not required"
+```
+
+### Some manufacturers condition the structural warranty on installation by an installer they have authorized, and where the selected system carries that condition an unauthorized installer forfeits the warranty regardless of the workmanship. {note}
+
+### The relationship between the tread surface and the adjacent finish floor is the most frequent installation failure in this work: a frame set high is a trip edge and an accessible-route violation, and a frame set low ponds water and collects grit at the perimeter. {note}
+
+## Mock-Up {toc}
+
+### Whether a mock-up is required shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Entrance Flooring Mock-Up
+type: radio
+options:
+ - "Required"
+ - "Not required"
+default: "Not required"
+```
+
+### Where a mock-up is required, the Contractor shall install one complete entrance, including the frame, the transition to each adjacent finish floor, and the specified tread inserts, at a location the Architect of Record directs, to establish the accepted standard for flushness, transition detailing, rail direction, and insert appearance.
+
+### An accepted mock-up may remain as part of the work and shall remain available for comparison until the entrance flooring is accepted.
+
+## Recess Coordination Before Slab Placement {toc}
+
+### Before the slab is placed, the Contractor shall coordinate the location, plan dimensions, depth, and drainage of every recess that will receive a recessed grille or mat with the frame manufacturer's required recess depth and clearances and with [[sync/cast-in-place-concrete]].
+
+### The recess depth shall match the frame and grille thickness plus the setting bed the manufacturer requires, so that the finished tread surface is flush with the adjacent finish floor within the change-in-level limit stated under Accessibility.
+
+### A recess formed to the wrong depth or without required drainage is the most expensive error in this work, because it is fixed in concrete before the grille is ordered and is corrected only by grinding, building up, or breaking out the slab. {note}
+
+# Exposure and Service Conditions {toc}
+
+## The exposure of each entrance, whether outside the weather line, beneath a canopy or overhang, or inside a vestibule or lobby, shall be as indicated on [[drawing: the floor plans and building elevations]].
+
+## A zone outside the weather line receives rain, wind-driven moisture, and, where the climate produces them, snow and ice, so its materials, its drainage, and its tread surface serve a surface that stays wet for extended periods; a zone inside a vestibule receives only what foot traffic carries in. {note}
+
+## Where [[parameter: site-ambient-temperature-minimum]] is below 32°F, a recess outside the weather line or beneath a canopy shall drain.
+
+## Where [[parameter: site-ambient-temperature-minimum]] is below 32°F, the connector, hinge, and anchor hardware in a recess outside the weather line or beneath a canopy shall be stainless steel.
+
+## Meltwater that refreezes beneath a grille heaves the inserts, locks a roll-up grille into its recess, and spalls the recess edge, and it does so every winter until the recess drains. {note}
+
+## Where de-icing salt is applied to the exterior paving, aluminum rails and frames in the zones the salt reaches shall be anodized or coated.
+
+## Where de-icing salt is applied to the exterior paving, the maintenance instructions shall include the removal of salt residue from the recess.
+
+## The heaviest rolling load crossing each entrance sets the grille rating, and an entrance that serves deliveries, hospital gurneys, or a valet drive receives a load that a pedestrian-rated grille was never designed to carry. {note}
+
+# Walk-Off Zones {toc}
+
+## Exterior Scraper Zone {toc}
+
+### The exterior scraper zone is the length of walk-off outside the weather line, ahead of the entrance door, and its job is to remove mud, grit, sand, and snow with a coarse, open surface that lets what it removes fall below the walking plane. {note}
+
+### The system provided in the exterior scraper zone shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Exterior Scraper Zone System
+type: select
+drawing_ref: "the finish plans"
+options:
+ - "Recessed rail grille"
+ - "Surface-mounted rail grille with beveled frame"
+ - "Recessed link or modular mat"
+ - "Surface-mounted mat with beveled edge"
+ - "Walk-off carpet tile"
+ - "Not provided"
+```
+
+### An exterior scraper zone is omitted where the entrance opens directly from a sidewalk with no depth available ahead of the door, or where the exterior paving is itself a scraping surface; where the entrance is set back under a canopy or approached across a plaza, the depth is available and the exterior zone removes the heaviest soil before it reaches the door. {note}
+
+## Threshold Scraper-Wiper Zone {toc}
+
+### The threshold scraper-wiper zone is the walk-off at the door line and through the vestibule, and it removes the remaining coarse soil while beginning to take up moisture. {note}
+
+### The system provided in the threshold scraper-wiper zone shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Threshold Scraper-Wiper Zone System
+type: select
+drawing_ref: "the finish plans"
+options:
+ - "Recessed rail grille"
+ - "Surface-mounted rail grille with beveled frame"
+ - "Recessed link or modular mat"
+ - "Surface-mounted mat with beveled edge"
+ - "Walk-off carpet tile"
+ - "Walk-off broadloom carpet"
+ - "Not provided"
+```
+
+### A recessed rail grille at the threshold puts the open spaces between rails directly under the first steps inside the door, so the soil that falls through leaves the traffic path instead of being carried across the lobby; a surface-mounted grille does the same where no recess can be formed, at the cost of a raised edge that must be beveled. {note}
+
+### A vestibule long enough to hold the whole threshold zone lets the grille sit between the two sets of doors, where it is protected from direct weather and where the recess is inside the building envelope. {note}
+
+## Interior Wiper Zone {toc}
+
+### The interior wiper zone is the walk-off inside the last door, and its job is to dry the shoe and hold the fine soil and moisture the scraper zones did not remove. {note}
+
+### The system provided in the interior wiper zone shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Interior Wiper Zone System
+type: select
+drawing_ref: "the finish plans"
+options:
+ - "Walk-off carpet tile"
+ - "Walk-off broadloom carpet"
+ - "Recessed rail grille"
+ - "Surface-mounted rail grille with beveled frame"
+ - "Recessed link or modular mat"
+ - "Not provided"
+```
+
+### A textile wiper holds moisture in its fiber and releases it by evaporation and by extraction cleaning, so it dries the shoe over a longer walk than a rail grille does; a rail grille with carpet inserts wipes over the insert width only, so it serves the wiper function where the recess already exists and the Owner prefers one system type at the entrance. {note}
+
+### An interior wiper zone is omitted where the interior floor immediately inside the door is itself a walk-off textile or where the entrance serves a space in which no wiper is wanted, and the full scraping and wiping load then falls on the zones ahead of it. {note}
+
+## Walk-Off Length {toc}
+
+### The minimum total walk-off length, measured across all zones in the primary direction of travel, shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Minimum Total Walk-Off Length at Each Entrance
+type: range
+unit: ft
+drawing_ref: "the finish plans"
+options:
+ min: 0
+ max: 40
+ setpoints: [0, 3, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40]
+```
+
+### The plan extents of each walk-off zone at each entrance shall be as indicated on [[drawing: the finish plans]].
+
+### Published walk-off guidance from the carpet and cleaning industries places effective capture at 12 to 15 ft of total walk-off for an office entrance and at 20 to 25 ft where traffic is heavy or where the interior floor must stay clean under a wet shoe, as in a grocery store, a healthcare facility, or a school; the difference between the two is the number of steps needed to dry a shoe, not a preference. {note}
+
+### A 3 ft mat at the door captures a fraction of the soil and moisture that a full-length walk-off does and saturates within hours of a storm, after which it releases moisture to every shoe that crosses it instead of removing any. {note}
+
+### Each grille and mat shall span the full clear width of the entrance opening, jamb to jamb or wall to wall, so that traffic cannot bypass the walk-off on either side.
+
+### A walk-off narrower than the opening leaves a strip of bare floor that traffic uses in wet weather precisely because it is dry, and that strip re-soils the interior floor as if no walk-off existed. {note}
+
+# Rail Grilles {toc}
+
+## Rail Construction {toc}
+
+### Where a rail grille is selected for any zone, its construction shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Rail Grille Construction
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Rigid lift-out sections"
+ - "Hinged sections"
+ - "Roll-up with flexible connectors"
+```
+
+### A lift-out grille is built of rigid sections that are lifted out one at a time to clean the recess; a hinged grille joins rigid sections with hinges so the grille folds back while staying rigid in plane; a roll-up grille links the rails with flexible cables or connectors so the whole grille rolls up from one end. {note}
+
+### A roll-up grille is the construction that makes frequent cleaning of the recess practical where the recess collects heavy grit and water or where a drain beneath the grille must be reached; a lift-out or hinged grille serves where the recess collects little and where the sections are small enough to lift without equipment. {note}
+
+### The rail material shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Rail Material
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Extruded aluminum"
+ - "Stainless steel"
+ - "Architectural bronze"
+default: "Extruded aluminum"
+```
+
+### Aluminum rails shall be extruded to ASTM B221 in an alloy and temper the manufacturer publishes for floor grille service at the selected rolling load rating.
+
+### Stainless steel rails shall be Type 304 or Type 316 to ASTM A276 or ASTM A240, with Type 316 used where the rails are exposed to de-icing salt.
+
+### Architectural bronze rails shall be extruded to ASTM B455.
+
+### Rails shall be spaced so that the openings between them satisfy the opening limit stated under Accessibility, and the rail spacing shall not be widened in the field.
+
+### Connectors, hinges, and cables shall be of a material that does not corrode in the exposure of the recess, and shall be stainless steel wherever the exposure clause of this standard requires it.
+
+## Tread Inserts {toc}
+
+### The tread insert is the walking surface carried by the rails, and the insert type sets whether the rail scrapes, wipes, or both. {note}
+
+### An abrasive grit strip gives the most aggressive scraping and the highest wet slip resistance and wears shoes and cleaning equipment accordingly; a serrated aluminum tread scrapes with no insert to wear out and is the loudest surface underfoot; a rubber insert stays slip-resistant when wet and tolerates freezing; a ribbed vinyl insert is quiet and easy to clean and serves where the surface stays inside the weather line; a carpet or fiber insert takes up moisture and holds fine soil; a brush insert flicks packed snow and mud from a shoe tread where the exposure produces them. {note}
+
+### The tread inserts permitted in the exterior scraper zone grille shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Tread Inserts in the Exterior Scraper Zone Grille
+type: checkbox
+options:
+ - "Abrasive grit strip"
+ - "Serrated aluminum tread"
+ - "Rubber"
+ - "Ribbed vinyl"
+ - "Carpet or fiber"
+ - "Brush"
+```
+
+### The tread inserts permitted in the threshold scraper-wiper zone grille shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet

+
+### The tread inserts permitted in the interior wiper zone grille shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Tread Inserts in the Interior Wiper Zone Grille
+type: checkbox
+options:
+ - "Carpet or fiber"
+ - "Ribbed vinyl"
+ - "Rubber"
+ - "Abrasive grit strip"
+ - "Serrated aluminum tread"
+ - "Brush"
+```
+
+### Where more than one insert type is permitted in a zone, the inserts may be combined across the rails of one grille, and the layout of insert types within each grille shall be shown on the shop drawings.
+
+### Combining inserts within one grille, with scraping inserts at the leading rails grading to wiping inserts at the trailing rails, lets a single recess scrape first and wipe last where the entrance has room for only one grille. {note}
+
+### Every insert shall be field-replaceable without removing the grille from its frame or disturbing adjacent inserts.
+
+### Insert colors shall be selected by the Architect of Record from the manufacturer's full range for the insert type.
+
+## Frame {toc}
+
+### The frame material shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Frame Material
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Extruded aluminum"
+ - "Stainless steel"
+ - "Architectural bronze"
+ - "Galvanized steel"
+default: "Extruded aluminum"
+```
+
+### Aluminum frames shall be extruded to ASTM B221 or formed from sheet to ASTM B209.
+
+### Stainless steel frames shall be Type 304 or Type 316 to ASTM A240 or ASTM A276.
+
+### Architectural bronze frames shall be extruded to ASTM B455.
+
+### Galvanized steel frames shall be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication to ASTM A123.
+
+### The frame setting method shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Frame Setting Method
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Cast into the slab"
+ - "Set in a grout bed in a formed recess"
+ - "Anchored to the hardened slab"
+ - "Adhesive set on the finished floor"
+```
+
+### A frame cast into the slab is fixed at the correct elevation before the slab exists and cannot be adjusted afterward, so it depends on the concrete trade holding it; a frame set in a grout bed in a formed recess is shimmed to the finished floor after the slab is placed and tolerates a recess formed slightly deep; a frame anchored to the hardened slab suits a renovation where the recess already exists; an adhesive-set frame is the surface-mounted case. {note}
+
+### The exposed finish of aluminum rails and frames shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Exposed Aluminum Finish
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Mill finish"
+ - "Clear anodized"
+ - "Color anodized"
+ - "Powder coated"
+ - "Fluoropolymer coated"
+default: manufacturer
+```
+
+### Where the datasheet leaves the finish to the manufacturer, the manufacturer shall state the finish furnished in the product data submittal.
+
+### Anodized finishes shall comply with AAMA 611, and organic coatings shall comply with AAMA 2604 or AAMA 2605.
+
+### Frames shall be furnished with mitered or welded corners and shall be straight and true within the manufacturer's published tolerance over their full length.
+
+### A surface-mounted frame shall have a beveled edge on every side exposed to traffic, sloped not steeper than 1:2, so that the raised grille does not create a change in level beyond the limit stated under Accessibility.
+
+## Recess Depth {toc}
+
+### The finished recess depth for recessed rail grilles and recessed mats shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Recess Depth for Recessed Systems
+type: range
+unit: in.
+drawing_ref: "the entrance floor recess details"
+options:
+ min: 0.25
+ max: 4
+ setpoints: [0.25, 0.375, 0.5, 0.625, 0.75, 0.8125, 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.5, 3, 4]
+```
+
+### Rail grilles are manufactured in shallow profiles on the order of 3/8 in. to 1/2 in., in standard profiles on the order of 5/8 in. to 13/16 in., and in deep-pit profiles from about 1-3/4 in. to 4 in.; a shallow profile fits a topping slab or a renovation with little depth to give, a standard profile carries the common rolling loads over a slab recess, and a deep pit gives room for a drain and a sediment sump beneath a grille that collects heavy water and grit. {note}
+
+### The recess locations and plan dimensions shall be as indicated on [[drawing: the entrance floor recess details]].
+
+### The recess depth, the frame, the setting bed, and the grille thickness shall be reconciled on the shop drawings and verified in the field before the frame is set.
+
+## Recess Drainage {toc}
+
+### The drainage provision beneath each recessed system shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Recess Drainage
+type: radio
+drawing_ref: "the entrance floor recess details"
+options:
+ - "Undrained recess"
+ - "Recess sloped to a weep at the frame"
+ - "Recess with a floor drain connection"
+```
+
+### An undrained recess serves inside a vestibule or lobby where the only water that reaches it is what foot traffic carries in and evaporation keeps up with it; a recess sloped to a weep at the frame carries away the water a covered or lightly exposed entrance collects without a piped connection; a recess with a floor drain connection is what a recess needs where it stands in direct weather, receives snowmelt, or is cleaned by wash-down, because those conditions deliver water faster than a weep or evaporation removes it. {note}
+
+### Where a floor drain connection is selected, the drain and its piping shall be as indicated on [[drawing: the plumbing drawings]].
+
+### A drained recess shall be sloped to its weep or drain at not less than 1/8 in. per ft so that captured water does not stand beneath the grille.
+
+### Water that stands beneath a grille stagnates, wicks back up into the inserts, freezes where the climate allows it, and carries the grit that settles with it into the drain when the recess is finally cleaned. {note}
+
+## Rolling Load Rating {toc}
+
+### Each rail grille shall be rated by its manufacturer for a rolling load per wheel not less than the value indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Rolling Load Rating of Rail Grilles
+type: range
+unit: lb per wheel
+drawing_ref: "the finish plans and schedules"
+options:
+ min: 250
+ max: 3000
+ setpoints: [250, 300, 350, 500, 750, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000]
+```
+
+### Standard-duty grilles are rated on the order of 300 lb per wheel, which carries foot traffic, hand carts, strollers, and wheelchairs; heavy-duty grilles are rated on the order of 350 to 500 lb per wheel for loaded carts, hospital gurneys, and pallet jacks; and grilles rated at 1,000 lb per wheel and above carry institutional equipment and occasional vehicle traffic at a loading entrance or valet drive. {note}
+
+### A grille that is under-rated for the load that crosses it deflects between its supports, loosens its inserts, and ravels its rails at the leading edge, and the damage appears at the entrance the building uses most. {note}
+
+### Where the entrance receives vehicle traffic, the grille shall be rated by its manufacturer for the wheel load and the tire contact area of the vehicle, and the rail spacing and support arrangement shall be those the manufacturer publishes for that rating.
+
+# Recessed and Surface-Mounted Mats {toc}
+
+## A link or modular mat is a scraper surface of rubber, vinyl, or aluminum links or modules joined into a flexible sheet, and a surface-mounted mat is a molded rubber or vinyl scraper with an integral beveled edge; both serve where a rail grille is not wanted and where the recess is shallow or absent. {note}
+
+## A recessed mat shall be sized to fill its recess with the manufacturer's published clearance at the frame and shall lie flat without ripples.
+
+## A recessed mat shall be set in a frame of the material selected for rail grille frames under this standard.
+
+## A surface-mounted mat shall have a beveled edge on every side exposed to traffic, sloped not steeper than 1:2, and shall be secured to the floor so that it does not creep or curl under traffic.
+
+## Openings in a link or modular mat shall satisfy the opening limit stated under Accessibility.
+
+# Walk-Off Textiles {toc}
+
+## Textile Fiber {toc}
+
+### The face fiber of walk-off carpet tile and broadloom shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Walk-Off Textile Face Fiber
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Solution-dyed nylon"
+ - "Solution-dyed polypropylene"
+ - "Polyester"
+ - "Nylon and polypropylene blend"
+ - "Coir"
+```
+
+### Solution-dyed nylon resists crushing under the concentrated traffic of an entrance and recovers its pile after extraction cleaning; solution-dyed polypropylene absorbs almost no water into the fiber itself, so it dries faster and resists staining from de-icing salt, at the cost of lower crush recovery; coir scrapes rather than wipes and sheds fiber as it wears. {note}
+
+### Walk-off textiles shall be of a construction the manufacturer markets for entrance service, with a backing that does not absorb water and that is dimensionally stable when wet.
+
+### The walk-off textile and its installation shall comply with [[sync/carpet]] for every requirement that standard states and this standard does not.
+
+## Flammability {toc}
+
+### Every walk-off textile shall pass the surface flammability test of 16 CFR 1630, which is technically equivalent to ASTM D2859.
+
+### The critical radiant flux class required of each walk-off textile shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Critical Radiant Flux Class of Walk-Off Textiles
+type: select
+derived: "the floor finish flammability class IBC Chapter 8 requires under [[parameter: adopted-building-code]] for the occupancy group and for the location of the textile, whether within an exit enclosure, exit passageway, or corridor or within a room"
+options:
+ - "Class I"
+ - "Class II"
+ - "Pill test only"
+default: derived
+```
+
+### Class I is a critical radiant flux of not less than 0.45 W/cm² and Class II of not less than 0.22 W/cm², both measured to ASTM E648, which is technically equivalent to NFPA 253. {note}
+
+### The class follows from the code and the location rather than from a preference: a textile within an exit enclosure, exit passageway, or corridor carries the class the code assigns to that location for the occupancy group, and a textile within a vestibule that the code treats as a room carries the pill test alone unless the Owner's program adds a class. {note}
+
+### The smoke density limit applied to walk-off textiles shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Smoke Density Limit for Walk-Off Textiles
+type: radio
+options:
+ - "Limit required"
+ - "Not required"
+default: "Not required"
+```
+
+### Where a smoke density limit is required, the specific optical density of the textile shall not exceed 450 in the flaming mode when tested to ASTM E662, which is technically equivalent to NFPA 258.
+
+### Aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, vinyl, and rubber components are not textiles and are not subject to the textile flammability tests. {note}
+
+## Low-Emitting Certification {toc}
+
+### The low-emitting certification required of each walk-off textile and its adhesive shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Low-Emitting Certification for Walk-Off Textiles
+type: select
+options:
+ - "Not required"
+ - "CRI Green Label Plus"
+ - "FloorScore"
+ - "Third-party certification to CDPH Standard Method v1.2"
+```
+
+### Where a certification is selected, the certification shall be current at the time of submittal and shall cover the specific product and adhesive furnished.
+
+# Accessibility {toc}
+
+## Openings in the Walking Surface {toc}
+
+### On an accessible route, openings in the walking surface, including the spaces between grille rails and the openings in a link or modular mat, shall not permit the passage of a sphere 1/2 in. in diameter.
+
+### Where openings are elongated, the long dimension of each opening shall be perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
+
+### The rails of a rail grille shall run perpendicular to the primary direction of travel.
+
+### Where an entrance has no dominant direction of travel, openings shall be limited to 1/2 in. in both dimensions.
+
+### The 1/2 in. limit keeps a cane tip, a narrow heel, and a small caster from dropping into or catching in the opening, and the perpendicular orientation of a rail grille serves scraping and accessibility with the same geometry, because every step then crosses the open spaces between rails. {note}
+
+## Changes in Level {toc}
+
+### The change in level between the tread surface and the adjacent finish floor shall be controlled at every edge of the system on an accessible route.
+
+### A change in level of not more than 1/4 in. is permitted without treatment.
+
+### A change in level greater than 1/4 in. and not greater than 1/2 in. shall be beveled with a slope not steeper than 1:2.
+
+### A change in level greater than 1/2 in. is not permitted at any edge of the system and shall be eliminated by correcting the recess depth, the setting bed, or the frame, or by a beveled or ramped frame edge on a surface-mounted system.
+
+### A rail grille shall be set so that it does not rock, shift, or deflect underfoot, and inserts shall be secured so that they do not lift or curl.
+
+## Slip Resistance {toc}
+
+### The walking surface of each zone shall be firm, stable, and slip-resistant.
+
+### The dynamic coefficient of friction of each hard tread surface, measured to ANSI A326.3 for the product use category that applies to its zone, shall be not less than the value indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Minimum Wet Dynamic Coefficient of Friction of Hard Tread Surfaces
+type: range
+unit: DCOF
+derived: "the ANSI A326.3 product use category matching the zone's exposure, Exterior Wet for a zone outside the weather line and Interior Wet or Interior Wet Plus for a zone inside it"
+options:
+ min: 0.42
+ max: 0.70
+ setpoints: [0.42, 0.45, 0.50, 0.55, 0.60, 0.65, 0.70]
+default: derived
+```
+
+### ANSI A326.3 assigns a minimum wet dynamic coefficient of friction to each product use category, with 0.42 for Interior Wet, 0.50 for Interior Wet Plus, and 0.55 for Exterior Wet, so the value for a zone follows from where the zone sits relative to the weather line rather than from a preference; the range floor of 0.42 is the lowest wet category the test method defines. {note}
+
+### The wet dynamic coefficient of friction is a comparative measure of the tread and does not by itself keep a person from slipping; the most slippery point at an entrance is the hard floor immediately beyond a shoe the walk-off failed to dry, so walk-off length is the primary slip control and the tread coefficient is the secondary one. {note}
+
+# Installation {toc}
+
+## Recess Verification and Frame Setting {toc}
+
+### The Contractor shall verify each recess for depth, level, squareness, and drainage before setting the frame, and shall report a recess outside the manufacturer's tolerance to the Architect of Record before proceeding.
+
+### The recess shall be clean, sound, and free of debris and standing water at the time the frame is set.
+
+### Where a drain or weep is provided beneath the grille, it shall be confirmed clear and the recess slope confirmed to reach it before the frame is set.
+
+### The frame shall be set level and square, and anchored or bedded so that the top of the frame establishes a finished tread surface flush with the adjacent finish floor within the change-in-level limit stated under Accessibility.
+
+### A frame set in a grout bed shall be shimmed and braced so that it does not shift before the bed has set.
+
+### A frame cast into the slab shall be braced to its elevation and protected from displacement during concrete placement, and its elevation shall be verified after the concrete has set.
+
+## Grille and Insert Placement {toc}
+
+### Each grille shall be field-cut and fitted so that it lies flat, fully supported by the frame, with the manufacturer's clearance at the frame perimeter.
+
+### Section joints in a grille built of sections shall be located out of the most concentrated traffic path where the entrance geometry permits.
+
+### Tread inserts shall be installed in the rails shown on the approved shop drawings, fully seated and secured so that they do not lift, curl, or migrate.
+
+### Roll-up and hinged grilles shall lie flat in the recess without ripples or raised connectors.
+
+## Walk-Off Textile Installation {toc}
+
+### Walk-off carpet tile and broadloom shall be installed in accordance with CRI 104 and with [[sync/carpet]], including subfloor preparation and moisture acceptance.
+
+### The walk-off textile shall be secured so that it does not shift, ripple, or curl under foot and rolling traffic.
+
+### The finished surface of the walk-off textile shall meet the grille frame and each adjacent finish floor within the change-in-level limit stated under Accessibility, with a beveled transition where the limit requires one.
+
+## Transitions and Sealing {toc}
+
+### The transition from the frame to each adjacent finish floor shall be detailed so that the finish floor elevations reconcile at the frame, in coordination with [[sync/resilient-flooring]], [[sync/ceramic-tile]], [[sync/natural-stone-tile]], and [[sync/carpet]] as the adjacent finish requires.
+
+### The joint between a frame outside the weather line and the adjacent paving or slab shall be sealed with a sealant in accordance with [[sync/joint-sealants]] so that water does not enter the recess around the frame.
+
+### The frame at the door line shall be coordinated with the threshold and door bottom in accordance with [[sync/automatic-entrance-doors]] and [[sync/aluminum-entrances-and-storefronts]] so that the door clears the grille through its full swing or slide and the threshold and frame meet without a gap.
+
+# Cleaning and Maintenance {toc}
+
+## Entrance flooring performs only while it is maintained: a grille whose recess is full of compacted grit, or a wiper textile that is saturated and never extracted, has stopped capturing soil and is redistributing it. {note}
+
+## The Contractor shall clean each installed system and its recess at substantial completion so that the Owner receives every recess empty and every drain and weep clear.
+
+## The maintenance instructions delivered under the action submittals shall describe the routine cleaning method and frequency for each system, the procedure for lifting, folding, or rolling the grille to vacuum and wash the recess and clear any drain beneath it, and the method for extracting or replacing saturated wiper inserts and textiles.
+
+## Worn, torn, or permanently soiled tread inserts shall be replaced rather than left in service, because a worn insert no longer scrapes or wipes and a torn insert is a trip edge.
+
+# Delivery, Storage, and Handling {toc}
+
+## Grilles, mats, frames, and inserts shall be delivered in the manufacturer's packaging with the system, zone, and entrance identified on each package.
+
+## Materials shall be stored indoors, off the floor, flat, and protected from moisture, construction dust, and traffic until installation.
+
+## Walk-off textiles shall be stored in the conditions and for the acclimation period the manufacturer publishes before installation.
+
+## Frames shall be handled so that they are not bent or twisted, and a frame that has been bent shall be replaced rather than straightened.
+
+# Warranty {toc}
+
+## The manufacturer shall warrant the rail and frame structure of each rail grille and mat system against defects in materials and workmanship for the period indicated in the datasheet, measured from the date of substantial completion.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Manufacturer Warranty Period for the Rail and Frame Structure
+type: range
+unit: years
+options:
+ min: 1
+ max: 25
+ setpoints: [1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25]
+```
+
+## A limited lifetime warranty on the rail and frame structure satisfies any period selected in the datasheet.
+
+## The manufacturer shall warrant tread inserts and walk-off textiles against defects in materials and workmanship, excluding wear, for the period indicated in the datasheet, measured from the date of substantial completion.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Manufacturer Warranty Period for Tread Inserts and Walk-Off Textiles
+type: range
+unit: years
+options:
+ min: 1
+ max: 5
+ setpoints: [1, 2, 3, 5]
+```
+
+## Manufacturers commonly carry a long-term or limited lifetime warranty on the rail and frame structure while treating inserts as wearing items on a shorter term, which is why the two periods are selected separately. {note}
+
+## The Contractor shall warrant the installation, including recess and drainage coordination, frame setting and flushness, grille fit, insert securement, and transitions to adjacent finishes, against defective workmanship for the period indicated in the datasheet, measured from the date of substantial completion.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Installation Workmanship Warranty Period
+type: range
+unit: years
+options:
+ min: 1
+ max: 5
+ setpoints: [1, 2, 3, 5]
+default: 1
+```
+
+## Where the contract documents state a longer warranty period than the datasheet, the longer period shall govern.
+
+## A failure arising from a recess formed to the wrong depth or without required drainage, from a rolling load exceeding the rating selected in the datasheet, or from maintenance contrary to the manufacturer's instructions is excluded from the manufacturer's warranty, and the party responsible for the excluded condition shall bear the cost of the correction.
+
+# Spare Parts {toc}
+
+## The Contractor shall deliver the spare parts indicated in the datasheet to the Owner before the entrance flooring is accepted, and shall obtain a signed receipt for them.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Spare Parts to Be Furnished
+type: checkbox
+options:
+ - "Tread insert strips of each type and color"
+ - "Walk-off carpet tiles of each type and color"
+ - "Grille connector and hinge hardware"
+ - "Frame anchors and shims"
+```
+
+## The quantity of spare tread inserts and walk-off textile, as a percentage of the installed insert length or textile area of each type and color, shall be as indicated in the datasheet.
+
+```datasheet
+label: Spare Insert and Textile Quantity
+type: range
+unit: '%'
+options:
+ min: 0
+ max: 10
+ setpoints: [0, 2, 3, 5, 10]
+```
+
+## Spare parts shall be from the same production run as the installed material where color matching depends on it, and shall be delivered in the manufacturer's packaging labeled with the system, the insert or textile type, and the color.
