title: Horizontal Centrifugal Process Pumps
category: Process / Pumps
description: >
When to use: Horizontal rotodynamic pumps for clean and raw water, finished water, service and seal water, plant washwater, and clean process transfer in water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and industrial process facilities, read together with [[sync/common-work-results-process]]. Covers end-suction frame-mounted pumps, including ASME B73.1 chemical process pumps, end-suction close-coupled pumps, axially split-case double-suction pumps, and self-priming centrifugal pumps for clean liquids. Addresses the hydraulic selection against the pump schedule, the operating region, NPSH margin and suction energy, the casing, impeller, wear rings, shaft, and bearings, packed and mechanical shaft sealing with the flush plan, the baseplate, coupling and guard, the motor interface, shop coating, the factory hydrostatic, performance, and NPSH tests under ANSI/HI 14.6, installation, alignment, field testing, the seal warranty, and spare parts.
− Not intended for: Solids-handling wastewater pumps in any arrangement, including dry-pit submersible and self-priming solids-handling pumps (see [[sync/submersible-solids-handling-pumps]]); line-shaft vertical turbine pumps and submersible well pumps (see [[sync/vertical-turbine-pumps]]); progressive cavity, rotary lobe, plunger, peristaltic, and air-operated diaphragm pumps for sludge and thickened solids (see [[sync/positive-displacement-pumps]]); the factory-assembled site lift station with its own pumps (see [[sync/packaged-pump-stations]]); building hydronic pumps (see [[sync/hvac-pumps]]), plumbing circulators and transfer pumps (see [[sync/plumbing-pumps]]), domestic water booster systems (see [[sync/domestic-water-booster-pumps]]), fire pumps under NFPA 20 (see [[sync/fire-pumps]]), and building sump, ejector, and grinder pumps (see [[sync/sump-and-sewage-pumps]]); fuel oil transfer pumps (see [[sync/fuel-oil-systems]]); chemical metering pumps, which belong to a chemical feed systems standard not yet owned by SynC; irrigation booster pumps, which are unowned; the motor beyond the interface stated here (see [[sync/electric-motors]]); the variable frequency drive (see [[sync/low-voltage-variable-frequency-drives]]); the process piping, its supports, and the valves on the pump suction and discharge (see [[sync/ductile-iron-process-piping]], [[sync/steel-and-stainless-process-piping]], [[sync/plastic-process-piping]], [[sync/process-check-valves]], [[sync/resilient-seated-gate-valves]], [[sync/eccentric-plug-valves]], and [[sync/butterfly-valves]]); and the wet well, clearwell, or dry pit structure the pump serves (see [[sync/water-retaining-concrete-structures]]).

### A spare seal of the exact face and elastomer combination on the shelf is the difference between an afternoon outage and a week of waiting on a seal built to order, because distributors rarely stock a cartridge seal in the configuration a given pump uses; the packing set is the equivalent for a packed pump, and the wear rings, sleeve, and bearings are the overhaul kit a plant buys for a pump it intends to rebuild in its own shop. A complete rotating element is bought for a raw water or high-service pump whose outage the plant cannot tolerate for the weeks a rebuild takes. {note}
