When to use: Rotodynamic (centrifugal) pumps that circulate water and water-glycol solutions for building heating, cooling, and heat-rejection service. Covers closed-loop heating hot water and chilled water pumps, open-loop condenser water pumps serving cooling towers and fluid coolers, condenser loops serving water-source heat pumps, and the vertical turbine pumps used where the supply level sits below the pump. Addresses the pump end, the driving motor, the baseplate or frame, the coupling, shaft sealing, vibration isolation, factory and field acceptance testing, and the coordination items that decide whether the installed pump reaches its certified curve.
− Not intended for: Fire pumps under NFPA 20. Domestic water booster and domestic hot water recirculation pumps. Sewage, sump, and lift-station pumps. Positive-displacement pumps of any kind, including chemical feed and fuel oil pumps. Refrigerant and brine pumps internal to refrigeration machines. Pumps furnished as an integral, factory-piped part of a packaged chiller, boiler, or heat pump unit, which are governed by the standard for that equipment. Hydronic piping, valves, and specialties beyond the pump flanges are covered in [[sync/hydronic-piping]]; variable frequency drives are covered in [[sync/hvac-variable-frequency-drives]]; chemical treatment of the circulated fluid is covered in [[sync/hvac-water-treatment]]; system flow balancing is covered in [[sync/testing-adjusting-and-balancing]].

### The curve with the startup point marked on it is the single most useful page in the manual, because every future troubleshooting question about the pump is answered by comparing a new measurement against that mark. {note}
