1Scope
1.1System definition
NOTEThis standard covers top-hung operable partition systems that divide a single space into two or more acoustically separated rooms and stack into a storage pocket or remote bay when not in use. (1.1.1)
NOTEOperable partitions are movable interior walls suspended from an overhead track; they are distinguished from fixed partitions by their ability to be opened and stacked, and from coiling doors by their flat, full-height panel construction. (1.1.2)
NOTEThe system shall consist of individual or paired panels, an overhead support track, panel-to-panel and perimeter seals, bottom and top closures, and the suspension hardware required for the specified operation. (1.1.3)
NOTEThe performance of an operable partition is governed as much by the building structure and adjacent construction as by the partition itself; the supporting structure, ceiling plenum, and floor flatness are integral to the rated performance and are addressed by this standard. (1.1.4)
NOTEThe Contractor shall provide a complete, operational partition system including all panels, track, hardware, seals, closures, and accessories required for the operation and acoustic performance specified, whether or not each item is individually described. (1.1.5)
1.2Work specified elsewhere
NOTEThis standard coordinates but does not furnish the following adjacent work, which is specified elsewhere: (1.2.1)

4Quality Assurance
4.1Manufacturer and installer requirements
NOTEThe manufacturer shall be a firm regularly engaged in the production of operable partition systems with a documented record of the specified product type. (4.1.1)
NOTEThe manufacturer shall have produced operable partitions of the specified type and rating for not less than five years. (4.1.2)
NOTEThe installer shall be trained, certified, or approved in writing by the partition manufacturer. (4.1.3)
NOTEA single manufacturer shall furnish the panels, track, hardware, and seals as a complete system to maintain the tested acoustic and fire ratings. (4.1.4)
NOTEMixing seals, hardware, or track from different manufacturers voids the laboratory test basis for the assembly, because the rated STC and fire performance are properties of the complete tested assembly and not of any single component. (4.1.5)
NOTEThe specified laboratory STC rating shall be substantiated by an ASTM E90 / E413 test report on the actual panel assembly proposed, not on a similar or representative assembly. (4.1.6)
NOTEFire-rated assemblies shall bear a listing label from a nationally recognized testing laboratory and shall be installed in strict conformance with the listed assembly. (4.1.7)
4.1.8Mock-up
NOTEWhere a mock-up is required, the Contractor shall install one full-height partition bay, including a panel-to-panel joint, the bottom seal, and the top closure, for review of operation, fit, and finish before proceeding. (4.1.9)
NOTEThe approved mock-up shall establish the standard of quality for the work and may remain as part of the finished work if undisturbed and undamaged. (4.1.10)

5Acoustic Performance
5.1Sound transmission class
NOTEThe single most important performance property of an operable partition is its sound isolation, expressed as the Sound Transmission Class (STC); the entire system design follows from the STC target. (5.1.1)
NOTEThe specified STC is a laboratory rating measured under ideal conditions per ASTM E90 and classified per ASTM E413; it represents the performance ceiling of the panel assembly, not the performance that will be achieved in the field. (5.1.2)
NOTEThe partition panels shall achieve the specified laboratory STC rating when tested as a complete assembly in accordance with ASTM E90 and rated in accordance with ASTM E413. (5.1.3)
Laboratory STC Rating (ASTM E90 / E413)range
STC
4045505356
NOTEField performance is always lower than the laboratory STC. (5.1.4)
NOTEField sound isolation is governed by flanking paths around, above, and below the partition that are not present in a laboratory test; the installed Noise Isolation Class (NIC) is typically eight to twelve points below the laboratory STC. (5.1.5)
NOTESpecifying a laboratory STC without also stating an acceptable field NIC sets up a performance guarantee that the partition alone cannot meet, because the field result depends on the ceiling, plenum, floor, and adjacent construction as much as on the panels. (5.1.6)
NOTEThe drawings shall identify the rooms requiring rated sound isolation and the partition zones to which each STC rating applies. acoustic partition schedule(5.1.7)
NOTEWhere field acoustic verification is specified, the installed partition shall achieve the specified field NIC or field STC when tested in accordance with ASTM E336. (5.1.8)

NOTEThe acoustic rating of the partition addresses sound transmission between the divided spaces; it does not control reverberation or noise within either space, which depend on the room's interior surfaces and are addressed separately. (5.1.9)
6Panel Configuration and Operation
6.1Panel configuration
NOTEThe panel configuration determines how the partition is operated, the room layouts it can serve, and, to a large degree, the acoustic performance it can reach. (6.1.1)
6.1.2Operation type
NOTEThe available operation types trade flexibility, setup time, and achievable acoustic rating against one another: (6.1.3)
An individual-panel system moves each panel independently along the track, offering the most flexible stacking and the widest range of room configurations at the cost of slower setup
A paired-panel system hinges panels together in pairs, simplifying operation and reducing setup time while limiting the available stacking configurations
A continuously hinged accordion system moves the entire panel train as a single unit, offering the fastest operation and the fewest configurations, and is limited to a lower acoustic range by its multiple hinge lines
A motorized vertical-fold system descends from a ceiling pocket and requires no floor track, achieving the highest acoustic ratings and operating without floor obstruction
NOTEThe partition operation type shall be as specified. (6.1.4)
Panel Operation Typeselect
Individual panel - top-hung
Paired panel - top-hung
Continuously hinged accordion
Motorized vertical-fold
NOTEAccordion systems shall not be specified where the required laboratory STC exceeds 40, because the continuous hinge lines of an accordion cannot be sealed to the standard required for higher ratings. (6.1.5)
6.1.6Drive type
NOTEThe drive type is selected for the panel weight, track geometry, and who will operate the partition: (6.1.7)
Manual partitions are moved by hand along the track and are suitable for most panel weights within an operator's capacity
Cable-assisted partitions use a cable system to ease movement of heavier individual or paired panels along curved or long tracks
Electrically operated partitions use a motorized drive and are specified for large, heavy, or vertical-fold systems, or where operation by untrained staff must be simplified
NOTEThe partition drive type shall be as specified. (6.1.8)
Drive Typeselect
Manual
Manual with cable assist
Electrically operated
NOTEElectrically operated partitions shall include an emergency stop and a means to detect and stop on obstruction during travel. (6.1.9)
7Panel Construction
7.1Construction requirements
NOTEPanel construction determines the partition's weight, acoustic rating, and finish options; heavier and denser cores achieve higher STC but increase the load the supporting structure must carry. (7.1.1)
NOTEPanels shall be of rigid construction that maintains flatness, alignment, and seal contact over the life of the partition. (7.1.2)
7.1.3Panel core
NOTEThe core construction sets the panel's mass, and therefore its achievable STC and its suitability for fire-rated assemblies: (7.1.4)
A steel-faced honeycomb core is a lightweight construction used for lower and mid-range STC ratings
A steel-faced mineral-board or gypsum-core construction adds mass for higher STC ratings and is the typical core for fire-rated assemblies
NOTEThe panel core construction shall be as specified to achieve the required acoustic and fire ratings. (7.1.5)
Panel Core Constructionselect

7.1.6Panel dimensions
NOTEPanel width affects the number of panels, the joint count, and the stacking-pocket size; standard widths reduce cost and lead time relative to custom widths. (7.1.7)
NOTEPanel height shall extend from the finished floor to the underside of the support header so that the top and bottom closures can seal continuously. (7.1.8)
NOTEPanels shall be provided in the nominal width specified, with the final panel widths adjusted by the manufacturer to suit the measured opening. (7.1.9)
Nominal Panel Widthrange

NOTEThe opening height and width shall be field-measured and confirmed on the shop drawings before fabrication. partition opening dimensions(7.1.10)
7.1.11Panel face finish
NOTEThe panel face finish establishes the appearance of the partition and shall meet the interior-finish flame-spread classification required for the occupancy. (7.1.12)
NOTEThe common face-finish options balance appearance, durability, and acoustic absorption: (7.1.13)
Fabric finishes offer acoustic absorption and a wide color range and are the most common choice for conference and assembly spaces
Vinyl and high-pressure laminate finishes offer durability and cleanability for high-traffic and institutional spaces
Wood-veneer finishes offer a premium appearance and require verification of the veneer's flame-spread classification
Writing-surface finishes provide a markerboard or tackable face where the partition doubles as a work surface
NOTEThe panel face finish shall be as specified. (7.1.14)

NOTEThe panel face finish shall meet the flame-spread classification required for the occupancy, demonstrated by an ASTM E84 test or, where the finish cannot achieve a Class A tunnel-test rating, by an NFPA 286 room-corner test. (7.1.15)
Required Finish Flame-Spread Classificationradio
● Class A (FSI ≤ 25, SDI ≤ 450) per ASTM E84
○ Class B (FSI 26-75, SDI ≤ 450) per ASTM E84
○ NFPA 286 compliant (alternative to ASTM E84)
NOTESubstitution of a non-compliant finish by the Contractor or Owner is prohibited; many fabrics and veneers do not meet Class A, and a non-compliant finish in a regulated occupancy is a code violation discovered at inspection. (7.1.16)
8Track and Suspension
8.1Track and carrier system
NOTEThe track carries the full weight of the partition and defines the path the panels travel between the opening and the storage pocket. (8.1.1)
NOTEThe track shall be a continuous extruded aluminum or formed-steel section sized by the manufacturer for the panel weight and span. (8.1.2)
8.1.3Track path
NOTEThe track path is chosen to suit the room layout and the number and location of stacking pockets: (8.1.4)
A straight-run track moves panels in a single line between the opening and a pocket at one end
A switchback or curved track allows panels to turn and branch to one or more stacking pockets, serving complex room layouts
Intersecting tracks with T- or Y-junctions allow a single partition system to divide a space in more than one direction
NOTEThe track path and any intersections shall be as shown. track layout plan(8.1.5)
Track Configurationselect
Straight run - single track
Curved / switchback
T- or Y-intersection
8.1.6Carriers and suspension
NOTEEach panel shall be supported from the track by trolley carriers running on the track's load surface. (8.1.7)
NOTECarrier wheels shall be of a material that runs quietly and resists flat-spotting under sustained panel load. (8.1.8)
NOTESuspension hardware shall allow vertical adjustment of each panel to set the bottom-seal clearance and align the panel tops. (8.1.9)
9Supporting Structure
9.1Structural requirements
NOTEThe supporting structure is the most common source of failed installations and field requests for information; its deflection limit is far more stringent than ordinary framing criteria. (9.1.1)
NOTEThe supporting beam or slab carrying the track shall be designed to limit deflection to a maximum of 1/8 in. per 12 ft of span, non-cumulative, under full dead plus live load, in accordance with ASTM E557. (9.1.2)
NOTEThis limit is roughly L/2400 and is far more stringent than the L/360 or L/480 limits used for visual or serviceability criteria; standard framing designed only to those limits will nearly always fail the partition's requirement. (9.1.3)
NOTEThe deflection limit shall be confirmed by the structural engineer of record and shown on the structural drawings. partition support beam and deflection note(9.1.4)
Maximum Supporting-Structure Deflection (ASTM E557)range
in per 12 ft
0.125
NOTEExcessive deflection of the supporting structure opens gaps at the top closure as panels are deployed, destroying the acoustic seal and binding the panels in the track. (9.1.5)
9.1.6Seismic anchorage
NOTEIn moderate to high seismic design categories, the track and stacking-pocket framing shall be positively braced to the structure in accordance with ASCE 7. (9.1.7)
NOTESeismic bracing connections shall not bridge the acoustic barrier between the divided spaces, because a rigid connection across the barrier creates a structure-borne flanking path. (9.1.8)
NOTEThe applicable seismic design category shall be as specified. (9.1.9)

10Seals and Closures
10.1Seal and closure system
NOTESeals and closures are the acoustic weak points of an operable partition; every gap they fail to close is a flanking path that lowers the field rating regardless of the panel's laboratory STC. (10.1.1)
10.1.2Bottom seal
NOTEThe bottom-seal type is selected for the required acoustic rating and the floor condition: (10.1.3)
An automatic drop seal deploys downward as the panel is locked into position and maintains contact across an uneven floor, and is required for higher STC ratings
A manual sweep seal is a fixed seal at the panel base suitable only for lower STC ratings and flat floors
NOTEThe bottom-seal type shall be as specified to suit the required acoustic rating and the floor condition. (10.1.4)
Bottom Seal Typeradio
● Automatic drop seal
○ Manual sweep seal
NOTEAutomatic drop seals shall provide vertical travel sufficient to close the gap over the floor's measured flatness variation. (10.1.5)
10.1.6Vertical edge seals
NOTEVertical seals between adjacent panels and at the fixed jamb, called astragals, close the joints that are the partition's principal flanking path. (10.1.7)
NOTEVertical edge seals shall engage under compression so that the panel-to-panel and panel-to-jamb joints close fully when the partition is deployed. (10.1.8)
NOTEThe vertical edge seal material shall be as specified. (10.1.9)
Vertical Edge Seal Materialselect

Brush
10.1.10Top closure
NOTEThe top closure seals the joint between the panel tops and the support header and is the single largest flanking path when it is left open. (10.1.11)
NOTEThe top closure shall provide continuous compressible contact between the panel tops and the header across the full length of the partition. (10.1.12)
NOTEThe ceiling above and adjacent to the partition is critical to its acoustic performance. (10.1.13)
NOTEA hard ceiling of gypsum or equivalent construction directly above the partition is strongly preferred; an acoustic-tile ceiling is a poor acoustic boundary and shall be replaced with hard construction in the partition zone or fitted with a continuous compressible head closure. (10.1.14)
Ceiling Construction Above Partitionradio
● Hard ceiling (gypsum) in partition zone
○ Acoustic tile with continuous head closure
10.1.15Plenum flanking
NOTEThe space above the partition and below the structure, the plenum, must be acoustically closed; sound that passes over the partition through the plenum bypasses the panel rating entirely. (10.1.16)
NOTEA continuous acoustic barrier shall be provided in the plenum above the partition, aligned with the panel plane and sealed to the structure and the partition header. (10.1.17)
NOTEDucts, return-air paths, structural members, conduit, and sprinkler branches that cross the plane of the partition shall be identified during design and rerouted or acoustically isolated, because each unaddressed penetration bypasses the partition's rating. (10.1.18)
NOTEPlenum penetrations within the plane of the partition shall be shown so they can be coordinated before construction. plenum penetrations at partition(10.1.19)
11Floor Conditions
11.1Floor flatness
NOTEThe floor beneath the partition must be flat enough for the bottom seal to function; a poorly flat floor leaves gaps at low points while the seal bottoms out at high points. (11.1.1)
NOTEThe finished floor beneath the partition shall meet the floor-flatness tolerance specified, measured in accordance with ASTM E1155. (11.1.2)
NOTEThe floor-flatness requirement shall be coordinated with the concrete floor specification so the tolerance is achieved during placement rather than corrected afterward. (11.1.3)
NOTEFloors that fail the flatness tolerance shall be ground or filled within the partition path so the bottom seal maintains continuous contact. (11.1.4)
12Pass Doors
12.1Pass door requirements
NOTEA pass door is a hinged door integrated into one or more panels to allow passage through the partition without opening it. (12.1.1)
NOTEWhere a pass door is specified, it shall match the acoustic rating of the partition so that it does not become a flanking path. (12.1.2)
NOTEWhere the partition is fire-rated, the pass door shall carry the same fire rating as the partition, because a non-rated door in a rated partition is a code violation. (12.1.3)
NOTEPass-door hardware, including the closer, latch, and threshold, shall be selected to maintain the door's acoustic and fire ratings when closed. (12.1.4)
NOTEThe number and location of pass doors shall be as shown. pass door locations(12.1.5)

NOTEPass doors and egress widths in subdivided assembly spaces shall comply with NFPA 101, and the partition location relative to exit-access corridors shall be confirmed. (12.1.6)
13Fire Resistance
13.1Fire-rated assemblies
NOTEFire-rated operable partitions maintain a rated barrier across the opening when deployed and significantly constrain the available panel cores, hardware, and finishes. (13.1.1)
NOTEWhere a fire rating is specified, the partition shall be a complete assembly listed for the rating by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and tested in accordance with UL 10B or NFPA 252. (13.1.2)
NOTEThe fire-resistance rating of the partition shall be as specified. (13.1.3)
Fire-Resistance Ratingradio
● Non-rated
○ 1-hour (UL 10B / NFPA 252)
○ 2-hour (UL 10B / NFPA 252)
NOTEA fire-rated assembly shall be installed exactly as described in the listing; substitution of any seal, hardware item, or finish not part of the listed assembly voids the rating. (13.1.4)
NOTENot all manufacturers offer a 2-hour rating; specifying a 2-hour fire-rated operable partition narrows the field of available products and shall be confirmed against product availability before bidding. (13.1.5)
14Storage and Stacking
14.1Storage method
NOTEWhen not in use the panels stack into a storage location; the storage method determines how much floor area the partition occupies when open. (14.1.1)
NOTEThe storage methods differ in how much floor area they free and at what cost: (14.1.2)
In-pocket storage stores the panels in a wall cavity so the room is fully clear when the partition is open
Remote-stack storage stores the panels in an adjacent bay, clearing the opening but occupying the adjacent space
Exposed-stack storage leaves the panels visible at one end of the opening and is the lowest-cost option where appearance permits
NOTEThe storage method shall be as specified. (14.1.3)
Storage / Stacking Methodselect
In-pocket (wall cavity)
Remote stack (adjacent bay)
Exposed stack
NOTEThe stacking pocket shall be sized to accommodate the full folded panel stack plus the clearance required for the panels to enter and exit. (14.1.4)
NOTEStacking pockets are routinely undersized on plans; the pocket width, depth, and height shall be confirmed against the stored stack dimensions on the shop drawings before the surrounding construction proceeds. (14.1.5)
NOTEThe stacking-pocket location and dimensions shall be as shown. stacking pocket plan(14.1.6)
15Installation
15.1Installation requirements
NOTEThe partition shall be installed by the manufacturer's trained or certified installer in accordance with the approved shop drawings and the manufacturer's instructions. (15.1.1)
15.1.2Sequencing
NOTEThe supporting structure shall be complete and its deflection limit verified before the track is installed, because the track cannot be aligned to a structure that has not yet been confirmed. (15.1.3)
NOTEThe track shall be installed level and aligned to the path shown before panels are hung. (15.1.4)
NOTEThe finished floor beneath the partition shall be complete and verified for flatness before the bottom seals are adjusted. (15.1.5)
15.1.6Adjustment
NOTEEach panel shall be adjusted at its suspension hardware to align the panel tops and set the bottom-seal clearance. (15.1.7)
NOTESeals shall be adjusted so that, with the partition deployed, the bottom, vertical, and top closures all engage fully and continuously. (15.1.8)
NOTEThe installed partition shall operate smoothly through its full travel without binding, and shall stack and deploy without forcing. (15.1.9)
15.1.10Protection
NOTEInstalled panels and finishes shall be protected from damage by other trades until final acceptance. (15.1.11)
16Field Quality Control
16.1Demonstration and field test
NOTEThe installer shall demonstrate full operation of the partition, including deployment, stacking, and seal engagement, to the Owner before acceptance. (16.1.1)
NOTEWhere field acoustic verification is specified, the test shall be conducted under ASTM E336 after the plenum barrier, ceiling, and floor are complete, because an early test measures an incomplete assembly. (16.1.2)
NOTEDeficiencies identified by demonstration or field test shall be corrected and the affected portion re-verified. (16.1.3)
17Delivery, Storage, and Handling
17.1Panel delivery and storage
NOTEPanels shall be delivered in the manufacturer's protective packaging and shall not be delivered until the storage area is enclosed and conditioned. (17.1.1)
NOTEPanels shall be stored flat or upright as directed by the manufacturer, off the floor, and protected from moisture and physical damage. (17.1.2)
NOTEFinished panel faces shall be protected from soiling, abrasion, and impact during storage and handling. (17.1.3)
18Warranty
