Acoustic Treatment
These are the standards in SynC Standards that cover Acoustic Treatment. Each one is a complete, plain-language specification: the scope it applies to, the requirements that govern it, and a structured equipment datasheet listing the values a project has to decide, with the standards each is verified against. All of it is written and maintained by SynC, free to read without an account, and published under CC BY 4.0.
A standard usually carries several topics, so most of the entries below also appear under neighbouring subjects. The topics each one carries are listed on its own page.
Standards
- Acoustic Insulation
Sound-attenuation cavity fill installed in the concealed cavities of interior partitions, in floor-ceiling assemblies, and above suspended ceilings as plenum attenuation, where the purpose of the fill is to raise the airborne sound transmission loss of the host assembly. Covers mineral wool, glass fiber, polyester fiber, and cotton fiber batts, blankets, and boards in that service; the tested-assembly basis that governs what goes in each partition type; fiber family, facing, surface burning, and noncombustibility as project-wide policy; minimum density and fill thickness; retention in vertical and horizontal cavities; plenum attenuation blankets and plenum barriers; installation, inspection before concealment, mock-ups, and field acoustic testing.
- Gypsum Board Assemblies
Interior gypsum board partitions, furred walls, and ceilings, and the gypsum sheathing on framed exterior walls, in commercial, institutional, multifamily, and residential buildings. Covers the gypsum panel products by exposure and duty: regular, Type X, and Type C board, sag-resistant ceiling board, mold- and moisture-resistant board, glass-mat faced board, abuse- and impact-resistant board, the wet-area backer boards that carry tile on framed walls, gypsum base for veneer plaster, shaftliner in area separation walls, and glass-mat and paper-faced gypsum sheathing. Covers the nonstructural steel studs, runners, furring, and resilient channels furnished to ASTM C645 and installed to ASTM C754, the suspended and direct-attached ceiling framing that carries gypsum board, deflection heads and partition bracing, in-wall blocking and backing for the trades that hang work on these walls, execution of fire-resistance-rated and sound-rated assemblies to their design numbers, perimeter acoustic sealant and electrical box treatment, fastening, multi-layer application, trim accessories, control joints, joint treatment, levels of finish, and textured finishes.
- HVAC Air Distribution Devices
Room-side air distribution devices that terminate a ducted or plenum air system at the boundary of an occupied space - supply outlets (square and rectangular face, round face, linear slot, swirl, displacement, light-fixture-integrated), return and exhaust inlets, and transfer openings, together with the frames, cores, integral dampers, and finishes furnished as part of the device. Covers the performance criteria that govern occupant comfort and acoustic acceptability (throw at 50, 100, and 150 fpm terminal velocities, ADPI, occupied-zone air speed, occupied-space sound level), device materials for dry, wet, and corrosive service, exposed finishes, security and anti-ligature construction, installation and support, and field balancing and verification. Applies to new construction and to renovation where devices are connected to a distribution system.
- Louvers and Dampers
Stationary exterior and interior louvers and the full range of air-control and life-safety dampers in commercial, institutional, and light-industrial buildings. Covers drainable-blade, storm-resistant (wind-driven-rain), sand-trap, acoustic, combination louver/damper, and penthouse/gooseneck louvers selected by free area and water-penetration class at the design intake velocity; air-control dampers (parallel- and opposed-blade) selected by AMCA 500-D leakage class; backdraft, gravity, and pressure-relief dampers; and the life-safety dampers required at rated barriers — fire dampers (UL 555), smoke dampers (UL 555S), combination fire/smoke dampers, and ceiling radiation dampers (UL 555C) — together with actuators, fusible and resettable links, sleeves, retaining angles, access, and the firestopping interface. Includes hurricane-zone (AMCA 540 / 550) and Florida/High-Velocity-Hurricane-Zone louver requirements and the AMCA Certified Ratings Program basis for ratings.
- Suspended Acoustical Ceilings
Direct-hung metal suspension grid systems and acoustical panels or tiles — both exposed-tee lay-in and concealed-spline — for commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, and hospitality interiors. Covers the suspension grid (type, profile, duty classification, and finish), acoustical panels (material, size, edge detail, and surface texture), acoustical performance (NRC and CAC), light reflectance, surface-burning fire performance, fire-resistance-rated ceiling membrane assemblies, seismic restraint and perimeter treatment, hold-down clips, trim and moldings, hanger wire and bracing, and integration with light fixtures, air devices, and sprinkler heads.
