Emergency Communication Systems

Systems that broadcast emergency voice instructions to building occupants.

Standards1

These are the standards in SynC Standards that cover Emergency Communication Systems. Each one is a complete, plain-language specification: the scope it applies to, the requirements that govern it, and a structured equipment datasheet listing the values a project has to decide, with the standards each is verified against. All of it is written and maintained by SynC, free to read without an account, and published under CC BY 4.0.

A standard usually carries several topics, so most of the entries below also appear under neighbouring subjects. The topics each one carries are listed on its own page.

  • Mass Notification Systems

Emergency communications systems under NFPA 72 Chapter 24 that warn the occupants of a building, the population of a site or campus, or a defined list of recipients of a fire or non-fire emergency and tell them what to do. Covers the risk analysis that establishes the system's scope as a design deliverable; in-building mass notification with its autonomous control unit, local operating consoles, priority of emergency messages over fire alarm evacuation signaling, visible notification and textual signs for non-fire events, and voice intelligibility as a measured acceptance criterion; wide-area mass notification using high-power speaker arrays; distributed-recipient mass notification by text, email, telephone, mobile application, and desktop alert as an integration requirement; two-way emergency call stations that are part of a mass notification function; pathway class and survivability; primary and secondary power; the message library and the live and prerecorded message hierarchy; and acceptance testing with intelligibility verification. Applies to campuses, healthcare, high-rise and assembly occupancies, transportation terminals, industrial sites, and Department of Defense facilities subject to UFC 4-021-01.
