Paving

Roadway, parking, and walkway pavement surfaces.

Standards2

These are the standards in SynC Standards that cover Paving. Each one is a complete, plain-language specification: the scope it applies to, the requirements that govern it, and a structured equipment datasheet listing the values a project has to decide, with the standards each is verified against. All of it is written and maintained by SynC, free to read without an account, and published under CC BY 4.0.

A standard usually carries several topics, so most of the entries below also appear under neighbouring subjects. The topics each one carries are listed on its own page.

Standards

  • Aggregate Base Course

Aggregate base course (ABC) for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects covering the placement, compaction, and quality control of crushed stone or processed graded aggregate used as the structural sub-base or base course beneath flexible (asphalt) and rigid (concrete) pavements, slabs-on-grade, building floor systems, exterior hardscape, equipment pads, and similar site improvements. Covers material classification and gradation, subgrade acceptance, geotextile separation where soft subgrades are encountered, lift placement, moisture conditioning, compaction, proof rolling, surface tolerances, and field testing. Intended to be read alongside the geotechnical investigation report, the civil grading drawings, and the structural or pavement section details, all of which govern design-specific values such as base thickness, target density, and material class.

  • Asphalt Paving

Dense-graded hot-mix asphalt flexible pavement for commercial, institutional, industrial, and multi-family site work, including parking lots, drive lanes, loading and service areas, fire lanes, and private site roadways, placed on an accepted aggregate base, a chemically stabilized layer, or a reclaimed base. Covers adoption of the state DOT specification by reference as an alternative to the project-written requirements, the design traffic level and the course thicknesses the pavement design hands to the paving contractor, aggregate quality, performance-graded binder, reclaimed asphalt pavement and shingles, Superpave and Marshall mixture design and the volumetric criteria, warm-mix asphalt, prime and tack coats, plant production and hauling, weather limits, placement, lift thickness, compaction, joints, edges, paving over a geosynthetic interlayer, full-depth patching and reconstruction of an existing asphalt pavement, the asphalt courses over a full-depth reclaimed base, and acceptance for density, thickness, smoothness, and mixture conformance. Read alongside the civil grading and paving drawings and the pavement design in the geotechnical report, which carry the pavement section, the course thicknesses, the binder grade, and the design traffic the datasheet fields of this standard defer to them.
