Standards are master templates that define specification requirements. Each requirement is authored as an independently citable clause, so a standard reads like a real construction specification rather than a wall of text.

Specifications are project-level instances of standards. When you add a standard to a project, it becomes a specification you can customize with project-specific requirements, comments, and data — without losing the link back to the master.

Datasheets capture detailed equipment and material data linked to specifications. They follow a structured format defined by the parent standard, turning open-ended choices into a guided set of fields.

A single standard can have multiple datasheet instances — for example, indoor vs. outdoor panelboards — each with its own values and revision history.

When a parent standard is updated, your filled-out datasheets don't fall out of date silently. The upgrade tool moves an instance to the new revision, carrying your existing selections forward wherever they still apply.

Anything that needs your attention — removed options, changed field types, or values that no longer fit — is flagged for review so you can resolve conflicts deliberately before the new revision is applied.

Standards can live in three places: the open SynC Standards wiki maintained by the community, your company's private library, and your own personal library.

Import from any of them into a project. Keep proprietary standards in your company library, draft your own in your personal library, and pull from the shared wiki when a community standard already covers what you need.

Not every value belongs in the specification — some are shown on the drawings or left to the project engineer. SynC lets you mark those requirements as deferred instead of guessing a value or leaving a blank.

Every deferred item across all of a project's standards rolls up into a single coordination checklist, giving the team one place to track outstanding decisions. Items resolve automatically once a value is specified.

Projects are the central organizing unit in SynC. Each project represents a construction effort and contains specifications, datasheets, and documentation.

Projects support full revisioning — publish snapshots of your project at any point to create an immutable record that can be distributed to stakeholders.

SynC's revisioning system provides a full audit trail for projects, standards, and datasheets. Each published revision captures a fingerprint-verified snapshot of the current state.

Revisions track what was added, modified, or removed between versions. You can compare any two revisions side-by-side to see exactly what changed. Snapshots store the full content, so older revisions stay readable on their own.

Take your work out of SynC when you need to. Published project revisions can be exported as JSON — in a compact form or with full element metadata — for use in downstream tools, quoting, and integrations.

The AI Assistant helps you work with specifications by answering questions about spec content, suggesting edits, and providing context from related standards.

AI interactions are scoped to your existing access — the assistant only sees the projects and standards you can already view, and conversations aren't stored after the session ends. See AI Usage for more details.

Add comments to specifications and datasheets to discuss requirements, flag issues, or provide context for your team. Comments are organized by section and support threaded discussions.

Share published project revisions with external stakeholders through secure share links. Recipients can view the project snapshot without needing a full SynC account, and you control exactly what each link allows and how long it lasts.

Enable forwarding to let recipients pass access along, and watch every open in the access records — so you always know who reached your project and when.

Connect external tools, AI agents, and scripts to SynC with API keys. Each key is limited to a subset of your own permissions and can be revoked instantly.

SynC uses role-based access control to manage what users can view and edit. Roles are assigned at the site, company, and project level, giving administrators fine-grained control over access.

Your account can be associated with more than one employer at a time — useful for consultants and anyone who works across firms. You choose which association is your primary context for new work.

When you contribute to the shared wiki, every active employer is disclosed alongside your contribution, so the community can judge potential conflicts of interest for themselves.

The SynC Standards wiki is an open library of construction standards anyone in the community can read, use, and improve. Contributors write the content, moderators review it, and adopters finalize the official, stable versions everyone relies on.
